Turkish defense company Ender ARGE has introduced what it claims is the world’s first loitering munition system featuring fiber optic cable-connected first-person view (FPV) components and foldable wings. The system is designed to maintain a continuous data link with its launcher, offering new tactical advantages on the battlefield.

Ender ARGE showcased its latest solution at the 17th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2025) held in Istanbul this July, and has reportedly already secured patents for the system and completed testing, declaring it ready for operational deployment.

"We examined other loitering munitions worldwide, especially fiber optic cable loitering munitions, and developed a product that doesn't exist in inventories and hasn't been used yet," Mustafa Mutlu Coban, General Manager of Ender ARGE, told Turkish news outlet Pasurunsesi.

"The biggest advantage we provide is that we turned this into a foldable-wing drone. It became integrable with some platforms like USVs and establishes a data link with its launcher throughout the operation, and this data link allows us to reduce our detectability and achieve pinpoint success," he added.

Traditional fiber optic rotary-wing drones often face higher radar detection risks due to exposed components such as fiber optic drums, munitions, and batteries. Ender ARGE’s design aims to reduce visibility and enhance survivability in contested environments.

The company has developed multiple versions of the system with launcher capabilities at 10, 20, and 50 kilometers. It can be integrated with platforms including unmanned surface vehicles (USVs), offering enhanced operational flexibility for both naval and ground forces.

The system includes a 2.5-kilogram warhead and is powered by an electric motor, which minimizes thermal and radio frequency emissions. This makes it difficult to detect using direction-finding antennas.

Ender ARGE completed testing of the fiber optic version earlier this year and is targeting a monthly production capacity of 1,000 units to meet domestic and NATO ally demand. Contracts have already been signed for the RF-equipped, non-fiber optic version aimed at African markets. Coban reported strong interest from the Middle East, Gulf, and African regions, with European markets also showing growing demand.

"In this form, it has the feature of being the first in the world, and we obtained the patent as Ender ARGE. This provides us with the following advantage: We have collected serious demand even in geographies like Ukraine, where fiber optic drones, FPV drones, and actually asymmetric elements are used the most," Coban stated.

The patent specifically covers the integration of fiber optic cable FPV units with foldable wings and their ability to establish a connection with a launcher. The system operates without seeker warheads or signal emissions, making it suitable for maritime environments and enabling ground forces to conduct sabotage operations against radar, jamming, and communication systems.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
