Asthma & COPD

SAE Media Group is excited to announce the latest event in their Asthma & COPD series, which returns to London on the 11th-12th April 2018.

With asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD) affecting about 500 million people worldwide, opportunities in drug development are vast and reducing serious attacks by improving adherence could save $19 billion a year in U.S. healthcare costs* http://reut.rs/2xqyBjZ

Recent advances in injectable biologics and smart medical devices as led to an increase in novel approaches to treating severe asthma and COPD as well as the regulations to take into consideration. As technology soars, the need for guideline updates from regulators has increased and continues to be modified.

Join us as we discuss current clinical trials and the innovative digital technology being used to improve clinical adherence. Leading industry experts will be looking at the use of ‘real world data’ human factors in the design of medical devices and triple combination treatments on the market. We will also be looking at asthma and COPD Phenotyping and biomarker application and differences between in the EU and US for the approval of biologics. We will be exploring the complexities of dry powder formulation and helping you determine clinical efficacy and endpoints.

Yassine Amrani

Principal Investigator , NIHR Biomedical Research Centre
Yassine Amrani

Dr Yassine Amrani is principal investigator at Leicester Biomedical Research Centre Respiratory in Leicester. For the last 20 years, Dr Amrani has been investigating the immunopathogenesis of lung diseases including asthma. His lab has made key observations showing how the interactions between pro-asthmatic factors and airway structural tissues, including as airway smooth muscle, could play a role in the pathogenesis of asthma (>90 articles). His group was among the first to propose that changes in calcium handling in airway smooth muscle may explain the development of airway hyperresponsiveness, a defining feature seen in asthmatic patients. His more recent work has focused on the non-contractile function of airway smooth muscle. His lab provided the initial evidence supporting the novel hypothesis that the failure of corticosteroid therapy to adequately manage patients with severe asthma could derive from their inability to affect the immunomodulatory potential of airway smooth muscle.

Bronchial smooth muscle hyperresponsiveness, airways hyperresponsiveness and inflammation in asthma: time to think again

Chris Corrigan , Professor of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, Kings College London

    • Asthma is a disease of airways smooth muscle characterised by non-specific hyperresponsiveness to multiple stimuli: recent research suggests that abnormal expression and/or function of the Calcium Sensing Receptor on airways smooth muscle mediates this phenomenon
    • Airways inflammation amplifies the effects of smooth muscle hyperresponsiveness because it narrows the internal diameter of the airways, and also because certain products of inflammatory cells, such as eosinophil cationic proteins, are agonists of the Calcium Sensing Receptor, while conversely the Calcium Sensing Receptor is involved in the activation of certain inflammatory cells
    • Inhaled and oral corticosteroids reduce airways inflammation to varying degrees in different asthmatic patients but do not affect smooth muscle hyperresponsiveness
    • Calcium Sensing receptor antagonists, if delivered topically to the airways, likely offer the first opportunity to treat asthma at its root cause and in addition are likely to reduce airways inflammation

    WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
