News - Pacto Medical’s Slimshot Wins Red Dot Design Concept Award 2026

July 2026 | Jack Overell – Head of Production, SAE Media Group

Pacto Medical has been awarded a Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2026 for its Slimshot platform, a next-generation prefilled syringe designed to reduce packaging volume and improve the efficiency of injectable drug delivery. The product was recognized in the Medical Devices & Technology Concept category and selected for display at the prestigious Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore.

The award highlights growing industry interest in delivery systems that not only enhance patient experience but also address broader challenges related to manufacturing, logistics, sustainability, and global healthcare access.

Slimshot reimagines the conventional prefilled syringe format by targeting one of the sector’s longstanding inefficiencies: the amount of space required for packaging, transporting, storing, and distributing injectable medicines. According to Pacto Medical, the patented design achieves a significantly more compact form factor while remaining compatible with syringe bodies and rubber stopper components already widely used throughout the pharmaceutical industry.

By reducing packaging volume, the technology has the potential to decrease transportation and storage requirements, lower sterilization and supply chain costs, and reduce cold-chain burdens. The company believes these benefits could prove particularly valuable in emergency response, humanitarian aid, and low-resource healthcare environments where logistics constraints can impact access to essential medicines.

A prototype of Slimshot will now be showcased alongside other award-winning concepts at the Red Dot Design Museum, which features innovative products demonstrating future trends in design and technology.

“It is surreal to win a Red Dot,” said Robert Halorsen, CTO and Co-Founder of Pacto Medical and lead designer of the project. “Slimshot was designed from the beginning to solve practical, global challenges in injectable drug delivery. This recognition validates our belief that better design can help make prefilled syringes more accessible and sustainable for patients and healthcare providers around the world.”

The achievement also underscores a broader shift within the pharmaceutical industry, where companies are increasingly evaluating the environmental and operational impacts of drug delivery systems. Packaging size, transportation efficiency, and sustainability have become key considerations as healthcare organizations seek to balance patient access with cost and environmental objectives.

Ian Speers, CEO and Co-Founder of Pacto Medical, emphasized that the design was inspired by real-world medical logistics challenges experienced during work in disaster response and low-resource settings.

“For us, great design is not only about form. Most importantly, it is about solving real-world problems,” Speers said. “Slimshot is designed to fit into existing pharmaceutical and prefilled syringe manufacturing infrastructure while helping partners reduce supply chain costs and waste, improve logistics, and expand access to critical medical products.”

Pacto Medical is currently engaging with pharmaceutical manufacturers, prefilled syringe producers, distributors, government organizations, and global health partners as it explores commercialization and licensing opportunities across multiple therapeutic areas.

As demand for injectable medicines continues to grow worldwide, innovations such as Slimshot demonstrate how device design can play an increasingly important role in improving healthcare delivery. By combining compatibility with existing manufacturing systems with a more efficient and sustainable format, the platform could help address both economic and logistical barriers associated with injectable therapeutics.

The Red Dot recognition positions Slimshot among a new generation of healthcare technologies focused not only on administering treatments but also on enhancing the efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability of global healthcare supply chains.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
