News - Spotlight on Innovation: AbbVie Experts Share Insights Ahead of the January PFS & Injectable Drug Delivery Europe Confere

October 2025 | Katie Ogden, Portfolio Manager – Pharma, SAE Media Group

As the pharmaceutical industry continues to evolve, the upcoming PFS & Injectable Drug Delivery Europe Conference, taking place this January, will serve as a key platform for industry leaders to explore the latest innovations, trends, and challenges shaping the future of injectable drug delivery. Among the featured speakers are three experts from AbbVie - Abby Lambretti, Jussi Haikarainen, and Mario Hirth - who will offer their perspectives on device development, patient-centric design, and the integration of emerging technologies.

Introducing the Speakers

Abby Lambretti, Senior Scientist II, Device Program Management at AbbVie in Ludwigshafen, Germany, manages portfolio readiness for pre-filled syringe (PFS) design control across asset projects and platforms. With nearly a decade of experience in various roles, functions, and therapeutic areas, Abby brings a broad perspective from bench to commercial development. “I am passionate about the importance of collaboration within complex cross-functional teams to meet shared goals,” Abby says.

Jussi Haikarainen, Director of Device Development at AbbVie in Ludwigshafen, Germany, leads device technology for both platform and asset clinical projects focused on subcutaneous drug delivery. Jussi notes, “I am keen to hear from peers how they are coming across the work and challenges in their respective fields.”

Mario Hirth, Director of Global Verification & Testing at AbbVie in Ludwigshafen, Germany, leads verification and testing teams for device and combination products. “I’m bringing my experience and perspective focusing on the priorities and challenges on different phases for drug, device, and combination product development,” Mario explains.

Recent Innovations in Injectable Drug Delivery

The injectable drug delivery landscape is rapidly evolving, with new technologies and approaches emerging to meet patient needs. Abby observes, “The trend towards personalized and more patient-centric design in injectable devices is exciting to see, as our patients take the medicine home more frequently and the industry is responding with more attention to how seamless that at-home experience can be.”

Jussi highlights, “The injection volume is an increasing trend and 3rd party manufacturers are active in expanding their technology solutions portfolio.”

Mario adds, “Self-administration injection devices have and are becoming core and center for multiple therapies and patient populations. Enabling treatments by combined delivery devices and drug development is a great technical challenge.”

Anticipated Challenges and Shifts

Looking ahead, the speakers identified several challenges and shifts in the pre-filled syringes and injectable drug delivery space. Abby points out, “Development of ultra-high concentration drugs and the resulting viscosity is a challenge, that we can see the industry reacting to already. It will be exciting to see how the market finds solutions in this space to support high force injectability.”

Jussi comments, “The trend for developing products allowing homecare continues, subcutaneous injections preferred over IV for obvious reasons where possible. Biologics going to e.g. inhalation vs. injections I would not foresee happening in remarkable scale in near-mid term.”
Mario notes, “The importance of delivery device such as auto-injectors and on-body devices will continue to increase while formulation aspects such as bigger viscosity and volume need to be considered for device design and patient tolerability.”

The Role of Emerging Technologies

Emerging technologies are expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of injectable drug delivery. Abby remarks, “The recent scale up of device mass markets has strengthened the need for intentional product lifecycle design and design for circularity. This will require a fundamental mindset shift from those of us involved in development processes, but the real impact will be realized when the infrastructure scales to support such device disposal and material recovery processes.”

Jussi observes, “Sustainability is an emerging topic especially in mass markets, e.g. diabetes care. I believe this trend will stick and spread across. However, the strongest hype around digital health seems to have faded away. One should consider things like if there are useful applications on single-dose devices and where the sponsors will be found, even though the compliance to the treatment is ever an issue.”
Mario adds, “Factors like reusability and sustainability will be incorporated much more into the design of combination products to ensure that safety, environmental and patient needs are understood and met.”

Looking Forward to the Conference

With the conference on the horizon, our experts shared their excitement and expectations for the event. They look forward to engaging discussions, networking opportunities, and exploring the latest advancements in the field.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
