Heavy Lift Uncrewed Air Systems providing a low cost, sustainable alternative

The nature of modern conflict has become more complex, more contested, and more expansive, changing the way that our customers operate. Autonomous systems play a key role in that connected, information-rich landscape. The development of agile and affordable new Uncrewed Air System (UAS) concepts will provide critical enabling capability in these ever more contested environments.

UAS Concepts being developed within BAE Systems offer the potential to enhance military operations and in some cases provide potential commercial applications.

Working with it’s subsidiary company Malloy Aeronautics, experts in heavy lift drone capability, BAE Systems has extended its portfolio of air power capabilities to include new and market leading automated logistic solutions. The T-Series range of all-electric uncrewed aerial systems have been developed to provide an affordable alternative for heavy lift requirement for use with both civilian and military customers.

Malloy bring a proven track record of innovative technology in this field which is complimented by BAE Systems understanding of the military operating environment and extensive engineering and systems integration experience.

With market leading payloads starting at 68 kilos with the T-150, the T-series range is designed to take on the tasks that remove risk and reduce cost in logistical operations.

The T-Series range provide a low cost and highly effective supply solution, across all domains, to remote and inaccessible locations. Platforms are tailored to customer needs and can include a variety of cameras, sensors, communications equipment and GPS hardening options.

Less training requirements are another benefit to the T-Series, making the system even more cost effective, simpler to operate and more sustainable compared to traditional systems such as the use of helicopters.

T-150

Providing the ability to reliably lift 68kg in all weather conditions, the T-150 UAS is a trusted partner. With a removable battery, the T-150 UAS is mission ready by design and there is no need to wait hours to send a vehicle back out, increasing cargo cadence and value for money.

Capable of delivering time sensitive and high value cargo, the T-150 UAS has been designed for the toughest military environments, demonstrated operationally in the arctic circle, desert and at sea.

The T-150 is a best in class, all-electric UAS that delivers operational excellence and is recognised by militaries across the globe as a leading logistics drone.

T-650

The most significant feature of the T-650 concept is its class-leading payload (300kg) which will open up opportunities for new and disruptive mission types. This type of vehicle allows rapid reconfiguration from one distinct mission type to the next. It aims to provide the versatility and utility required by our customers to discharge multiple roles in a cost-effective and sustainable way, giving an alternative to traditional delivery systems.

There are a number of potential applications for a T-650 class of product. These range from Logistics activity such as ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore movement, to potential carriage of weapons and sensors to support military operations on land and at sea. Once proven, the Electric Air vehicle could expand into wider application, such as casualty evacuation on the battlefield.

This range of capability is being developed and delivered through FalconWorks® - a new centre for advanced and agile research and technology development within BAE Systems Air Sector.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
