SAE Media Group is delighted to announce its 7th Annual Smart Water Systems Conference, which will be held in London on the 25th and 26th April 2018.

A smart water system is designed to gather meaningful and actionable data about the flow, pressure and distribution of an area's water supply and waste. Furthermore, it is critical that that the consumption and forecasting of water use is accurate, readable and manageable. That is why Smart Water Systems 2018 will look at topic areas such as the best solutions for monitoring and metering; understandings of customer expectations using behavioural science and data-collection tools; handling of 'big' data; and the operational strategies of UK and international utility companies that are already advancing with smart network technologies and strategies.

Water systems are a critical component of our broader utility management system in our increasingly technologically advanced society. Once water facilities are optimized and designed to gather meaningful and actionable data, industry leaders can make better and faster decisions about their operations, which can result in up to 30 percent energy savings and up to 15 percent reduction of water losses. This conference will witness a vast-breadth of experience in the smart world from the advanced systems of Thames Water's efficiency programme though to Water-Link's proactive flooding detection and many more examples from across Europe

The 2018 Smart Water Systems conference will therefore allow for informative presentations  from subject matter experts in all areas related to smart water systems, and thereby provide a tremendous opportunity for meaningful discussion. Andrew Tucker

Andrew is the Water Efficiency & Affordability Manager at Thames Water and is responsible for delivering the largest water saving targets in the UK water sector. He is overseeing the development and delivery of initiatives in household and business markets. The work streams are delivered in parallel with Thames’ smart metering rollout and as bespoke demand management initiatives. These include large-scale in-home retrofitting, water audits, businesses and schools, and water efficiency communications, retail propositions, online tools and customer advice. Andrew is also overseeing the development of Thames Water’s Affordability & Vulnerable Customer Strategy which covers social tariffs and priority services initiatives for vulnerable customers. Andrew overseas Thames’ relationship with Homeserve and represents Thames Water retail business on the WaterAid steering committee. Previously, Andrew has been the Water Strategy Manager for the Energy Savings Trust - working to integrate and drive water efficiency through the UK energy efficiency and carbon reduction agendas, and lead the development of the Water Energy Calculator. Andrew was Principal Policy Officer for Climate Change Adaptation and the Manager of the London Climate Change Partnership at the Greater London Authority, and worked in the Australian mining industry as an Environmental Adviser, within coal and base metal mining and processing operations.

Ben Earl is the Water Efficiency Manager for Southern Water where he is developing future strategy, implementing new business models and delivering ambitious water efficiency targets. Before working for a Utility, Ben was Climate Change Advisor and then Environmental Affairs Manager for B&Q where he delivered key business sustainability targets and improvements to products purchased by customers. Ben’s early career was spent working for several politicians before major roles in the charitable sector.

An experienced and certified Lean Six Sigma Black belt and change management professional comfortable working at both Senior Executive and Operational Levels with over 8 years’ experience creating and delivering change strategies for large scale complex programmes of work with a focus on business transformation, multi-function process improvements, procedure design, system development, strategy deployment and cost effective improvements.

I am responsible for the implementation and oversight of the Dwr Cymru Welsh Water data management strategy (WISER) and its goals, standards, practices, processes and technologies.

Bert De Winter is Chief Innovation Officer at De Watergroep, the largest drinking water company in Flanders, Belgium. He is the owner of the smart metering project at De Watergroep. He holds a degree in computer science engineering and a bachelor's degree in biotechnology. He has been working for De Watergroep since 2009, where until the end of 2017, as director of ICT, he has ensured the outsourcing of operational ICT, the rationalization of the application portfolio and the digitization of business processes. Between 1990 and 2006, he worked for the Agfa-Gevaert international imaging group at its head office in Belgium. He has worked in the central research and development division, where he has mainly worked on new imaging systems for the graphics and healthcare sector.

Bob Stear

Bob is the Head of Innovation at Severn Trent Plc - who provide and treat water and waste water in the UK and internationally. Bob's career has split into two halves; the first in operations management of sewage treatment and water production facilities serving circa 2 million customers and the second in strategic planning and innovation.

In 2013 Bob was seconded into Defra for a year to work on implementation of the Water Act 2014.

He now runs Severn Trent's Innovation portfolio that is geared towards the Company purpose; "To serve our communities and build a lasting water legacy".

Carolin Reiner

Associate Advisor, The Behavioural Insights Team
Carolin Reiner

Carolin works as an Associate Advisor at the Behavioural Insights Team focusing on energy, economic growth and sustainability. At BIT, she has been leading on aspects of a vast number of projects ranging from water consumption, sustainable food consumption to driving innovation across the UK. Before joining BIT in 2016, Carolin worked on climate policy issues at the German Institute for Economic Research. She holds a Master’s in Public Policy (MPP) focused on quantitative policy evaluation from the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Political Science from Sciences Po Paris.

David Black

David Black

David is a senior director at Ofwat, the economic regulator of the water sector in England and Wales. He is leading the Water 2020 programme covering wholesale markets and the 2019 price review. Before taking this role, he was Director of Economics, closely involved in delivery of the 2014 price review, leading the finance and modelling team. David joined Ofwat in July 2012. Prior to joining Ofwat, David was an economics consultant, focusing on the communications and utilities sectors. Prior to consulting, David was an economist at Oftel and the New Zealand Treasury and NZ Commerce Commission.

Head of Integrated Management Systems and Asset Information at Dwr Cymru Welsh Water

Gary heads a function comprising seven work streams at Dwr Cymru, delivering operational services with a strong focus on asset data management and data exploitation and the application of new and emerging technologies in an industrial context including augmented and virtual reality.

Gary has worked in a wide range of industrial, offshore and service delivery environments and his expertise in Occupational Health and Safety and Risk Management has resulted in him being employed as an expert evidence in the prosecution and defence of businesses and individuals.

Gary presently leads the Dwr Cymru Welsh Water team delivering big data outputs to field based operators using ruggedised and wearable technology utilising both AR, VR and the IoT– “the right information, presented in the right way, in the timely manner at the operator’s point of use with a view to reducing risk and driving efficiency”

With over 20 years experience in the Water Industry, and a background in both mechanical engineering and database applications, Jeremy is responsible for the management of innovation within SESW. This involves both the development of an innovation culture and the introduction of new technologies into the Water Industry, in particular the Smart Water Network. This innovative network will be built on enhanced sensors, a communication layer, intelligent processing, intuitive graphical displays and workforce mobilisation.

Kevin Murray

Kevin Murray is the Metering Technology and Solutions Specialist in the Asset Strategy function of Irish Water; and was formerly the technical lead in Irish Water’s Phase 1 Domestic Metering Programme. Kevin holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Science and is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of Engineers Ireland.

He is also a member of the Water UK Revenue Metering Network and is the Ireland representative on the CEN TC/92 (Water Meters) standardization committee. Kevin has considerable business experience and is a former director of Cork Chamber of Commerce and a former Deputy President of Chambers Ireland.

Mario Maessen

Mario Maessen is senior data scientist at Vitens, the largest drinking water company in The Netherlands.
He is one of the key persons in the smart grid approach of the distribution network at Vitens. He is involved in the introduction of water quality sensors in the distribution network and the development of real time analysis algorithms to detect and interpretate anomalies.
He has more than 20 years of experience in the modeling and analysis of complex water distribution systems for water quantity as well water quality. Formerly he was senior Data Scientist at KWR Water Research Institute in The Netherlands.

Martin has worked in the technology industry for 18 years, holding a range of delivery, strategy and relationship management roles, across the Automotive and Utilities sectors. Martin has been with the Northumbrian Water Group for the past 6 years and currently holds the position of Head of Strategy and Enterprise Architecture. Martin and his team are responsible for setting the 1-5 year enterprise technology and systems strategy, leading on technology innovation and developing leading edge business solutions. Martin has a personal passion for exploring emerging technologies and exploring innovative ways to deliver great business outcomes for the benefit of NWG customers. Martin is currently developing a new digital technology strategy for NWG; which aims to leverage digital technologies to run smarter operations, deliver brilliant customer experiences and provide more intelligent insights for NWG teams.

Michael Allen is a co-founder of Visenti and Executive Director of Embedded Systems. He directs the development of Visenti’sintelligent sensing and telemetry technology.
Michael holds a PhD in Computer Science. His research focused on the development and integration of high data-rate wireless embedded sensing systems and on-line data processing algorithms.
From 2009 to 2013 he was a Postdoctoral Associate at the Singapore MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), where he worked on the development, integration and deployment of Smart Water Network Technologies for Singapore’s water distribution system.

Peter Yolles

Peter leads WaterSmart’s new market development and governmental and regulatory affairs activities. He has decades of experience in water efficiency, water rights and transfers, environmental regulation, finance, economics and policy. Prior to WaterSmart, Peter was Director of Water Resource Protection for The Nature Conservancy, where he led river restoration efforts throughout California. Early in his career, Peter also worked at GE Capital Solutions, Environmental Defense Fund, and the Pacific Institute. Peter earned his MBA in Finance from the Yale School of Management and an MES in Water Science, Management and Policy from Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Ruth Clarke

Ruth Clarke is a civil engineer with over 20 years’ experience in the Water Industry. During this time Ruth has worked both as a consulting engineer, using water modelling applications in her day to day job, as well working for the software companies responsible for providing innovative solutions to the Water Industry. Ruth has helped develop and implement software applications for use in fluvial and pluvial flooding projects, real-time operational forecasting and real-time analytics. Ruth currently works as a Senior Water Sales Executive for Bentley Systems International and is responsible for the Europe, Australia and New Zealand markets.

Steve is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and has worked in the water industry for around twenty seven years. Steve has an MBA from City University in London and is also a Visiting Professor at Imperial College and Brunel University.

Steve’s career in the water started in the manufacturing industry where he was involved in the R&D and design.

At Anglian Water Steve has held key roles in Capital Delivery and Operations and more recently as Head of Innovation.

He has developed and led the company’s Open Innovation Strategy.

Steve is a creative individual who is passionate about making a better world through innovation; he is actively involved in fostering collaborations with other companies, including other industrial sectors.

He also chairs the Industrial Advisory Panel for the STREAM programme, a university collaboration funded by EPSRC.

Steven De Schrijver works since 2008 for water-link. He is since 2015 water-link’s Chief Operations Officer. In this position, he is responsible for exploitation, maintenance, engineering and customer service & sales. Before, Steven was plant manager and process coordinator.
After an education as bio-engineer (KULeuven), Steven followed a management education in France (DESS CAAE – IAE Aix-en-Provence) and an eMBA at the Antwerp Management School.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
