Waste to Fuels – A Future Landscape?

Company Overview

Ricardo Energy & Environment is a leading sustainability consultancy, helping clients to respond to environmental challenges and opportunities around the world. Our team of over 400 staff has supported many governments, businesses and international organisations for over 40 years. The team draws on this impressive heritage with expertise in air quality, climate change, chemical risk, energy, water, environmental impact, resource efficiency, sustainable transport and waste management. The workshop will examine the UK journey to waste to fuels solutions and how current subsidy mechanisms may be able to provide vital support to technology developers and investors and how these may be legally bound in the future. We will also look at 2 project case studies; achieving end of waste and the key challenges within the project environment that may need to be overcome to achieve delivery of new and developing technologies.

David Woolford

David has recently conducted due diligence of a UK dRTFC qualifying plant to validate estimated capital and operational costs of building a 100,000 tpa plant and is providing technical and commercial advice to the developer of 250,000 tonne per annum gasification plant that converts biomass into renewable transport fuel.
David brings his experience of supporting waste infrastructure projects, extensive understanding of stakeholders, and good inter-personal skills. His knowledge and experience of due diligence and delivery can be best placed to help both those within the waste sector and also those who may be seeking to enter for the first time.

Senior Consultant, RICARDO ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT
Elizabeth Lawrenson

Elizabeth is a Chemical Engineer with over four years’ relevant experience. She joined Ricardo Energy & Environment’s waste sector due diligence team from Mott MacDonald in January 2018 and brings detailed technical knowledge of a range of waste treatment technologies including combustion, gasification, anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis and autoclaving.
Elizabeth is experienced leading technical and environmental due diligence projects on behalf of owners and investors on both buy and sell side both on the design of facilities prior to construction and on potential acquisitions of existing portfolios of facilities. She has worked on due diligence for gasification and other thermal waste treatment technologies as well as for conventional power generation and thermal processes for the recovery of material from the residues produced from traditional metals processing. Common across all due diligence was the need to assess for red flags in designs of/ operation of plants.
In addition to technical engineering, Elizabeth has undertaken project management on a variety of international projects including technical due diligence and has a proven track record of delivering complex projects within tight timescales. Projects have included delivering technical advisory services on a proposed AD plant in Hong Kong, including technical input into tender specification planning and managing the technical review of tender submissions; reviewing tender design documentation for the independent certification of an Integrated Waste Management Facility to be built in Hong Kong, and assessing the efficiency of organic waste treatment options in Singapore.
Elizabeth has experience providing support to investors and the DfT on the Waste to Biofuels projects including leading the technical review of review of a planned 250,000 tonne per annum waste wood to gasoline plant and working as a member of the monitoring team on the Fuels for Freight & Flight Competition (F4C) which is being run by the UK Department for Transport (DfT). The competition will allocate £20m of grant funding to support novel advanced conversion technologies, transforming waste into renewable fuels for heavy good vehicles and aviation; these sectors are seen by Government as harder to decarbonise as electrification is unlikely to be viable. Elizabeth will monitor the delivery of the selected plants through to 2021.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
