SAE Media Group’s 3rd Annual Biosensors for Medical Wearables Conference will be back for 2023 in Boston to bring together device developers, MedTech, component manufacturers and big pharma to share and discuss the exciting advances in the medical wearable technology landscape.


The wearable biosensors market has grown significantly in recent years leading to increasingly growing potential for medical applications and at home alternatives for patients. With growing applications and potential in remote patient monitoring, diagnosis, therapeutics and detection of disease, wearable sensors are attracting considerable interest due to their opportunities in better supporting patients, clinical outcomes and decisions. Furthermore, AI and connected technologies are furthering the potential opportunities of this industry. However, challenges including flexibility of wearable devices, the collection of clinical-grade data and advanced battery technologies still remain for the industry to overcome. This year’s conference looks to address these hot topics through case studies and industry insights.

Alicia Chong Rodriguez

Alicia Chong Rodriguez is the CEO at Bloomer Tech. She graduated from the MIT Electrical Engineering & Computer Science program and MIT IDM, where her research focused on sex-specific, computationally-generated, cardiac biomarkers at the MIT Computational Cardiovascular Research Group. She received the MIT Legatum Fellowship and the MIT Graduate Women of Excellence Award. She has also been recognized as a 2018 Medtech Boston 40 under 40 Healthcare Innovator, and in the top 100 Female Founders across the U.S. by Inc Magazine. Prior to MIT she worked in the semiconductor industry at companies such as HP and Teradyne and co-founded MenTe en Acción (Mujeres en Tecnología) where she currently serves on the board as a technical advisor

Aceil Halaby is the COO at Bloomer Tech. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in industrial design from RISD and graduated from the MIT Integrated Design & Management master's program. Her thesis at the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence focused on highly productive product teams. She has won the Harvard Arab pitch competition, HITLAB's Women's Health Tech Challenge, and led Bloomer Tech to become part of the top 20 of MassChallenge finalists. She has also been recognized and interviewed by Forbes, MIT Tech Review, Cheddar and Bostinno.

Aceil Halaby and Alicia Chong Rodriguez are the founders of Bloomer Tech. The company is ushering in a new age of personalized healthcare, disease prevention, and management. Using patented augmented clothing and novel digital biomarkers, Bloomer Tech works with providers to reduce high rates of hospital readmissions, undertreatment, and underdiagnosis that can cause sudden deaths in often overlooked populations. Their vision is to increase access and inclusivity in cardiovascular research and treatment without changing a woman's lifestyle or leaving her health to chance.

The Bloomer Tech founders met at MIT and became the first venture funded startup focused on solutions for cardiovascular disease and stroke in women. Their patented technology platform leverages more than 20 years of evidence-based research showing sex and ethnicity-related differences in the cardiovascular system. This enables women, researchers, and care providers to learn from each individual's unique physiology and provide data-driven care remotely. The company was named to the Forbes list of 50 Women-Led Startups That Are Crushing Tech.

Andreas Caduff has been a driving force in the development of non-invasive and contextualized physiological monitoring. He was serving as CTO of Solianis where he orchestrated the development of non-invasive glucose monitoring. He then founded Biovotion and served for 7 years as CEO, offering a state-of-the-art user-centric, analytics driven ecosystem, powered by medical wearable technology. Biovotion received several international awards and high calibre endorsements for its innovations, including an award from the XPrize Foundation. Biovotion was acquired by Biofourmis in 2019. Today he is working at the interface of secured medical technology, physiological monitoring and data science, towards a more holistic view of health.

Branislav Vajdic

Branislav Vajdic

Branislav Vajdic, PhD, Founder and CEO of HeartBeam, Inc, combines over 30 years of experience in technology development and senior management positions. Prior to HeartBeam, Dr. Vajdic was CEO and Founder of NewCardio, a publicly traded cardiovascular device company. Previously, he spent 23 years at Intel, where he was the designer of the first Flash memory and author of two key inventions that enabled Flash. He also led engineering groups responsible for Pentium 1 through 4 designs. He is the author of numerous patents and publications. Dr. Vajdic holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Catherine Liao

Catherine Liao

A passionate technologist and entrepreneur known for her intuition, hustle and know how, Catherine Liao has an uncanny ability to recognize the white space where technology can be used to solve unmet needs. At age 19, Catherine got her start in tech working as a systems engineer for one of the first Internet conferencing services in the 90s. That eventually led her to the World Health Organization, where she successfully scaled WHO’s web infrastructure during the peak of the SARS epidemic, when demand for content exploded 20x overnight, topping over 14 million hits a day. As the Chief Strategy of CardieX, Catherine now leads the go-to-market strategy for an innovative global medical devices company specializing in heart health.

Prior to CardieX, Catherine served as the co-founder and CEO of Blumio, a venture-backed startup that developed a wearable sensor for blood pressure monitoring. The company was acquired by CardieX in 2022. Before embarking on her entrepreneurial journey, Catherine worked with some of the world’s largest enterprises, leveraging technology to drive business outcomes for over a decade. At Cisco, she helped commercialize technologies that enhanced the efficiency of business-critical applications, including the timely transmission of medical images, a breakthrough that allowed physicians to make medical decisions without delays. Leading a solutions marketing team at Riverbed, she spearheaded the go-to-market strategy of the company’s application performance platform.

An active leader in the startup community with an MBA from Imperial College London and MSc in Health Economics from London School of Economics, Catherine provides guidance and mentorship to other entrepreneurs as an Executive Mentor for Santa Cruz Accelerates and a Program Lead for the Startup Leadership Program. In her downtime, you’ll likely find Catherine at her favorite wine bar where she is serves as an investor—and chief glass washer.

Girish holds an MBA from Boston University.

Grant Weller is Vice President, Data Science at BioIntelliSense, Inc., a Denver-based continuous health monitoring and clinical intelligence company. Grant is responsible for the development and implementation of cloud-based data-as-a-service (DaaS) algorithms supporting patient monitoring both in-hospital and at home. BioIntelliSense's FDA-cleared technology stack includes the BioButton device, BioCloud DaaS platform, and AlertWatch clinician-facing monitoring services. Grant has a decade of experience in data science leadership roles in the wearables and digital health industry, previously as Vice President of Research with UnitedHealth Group's Optum Labs division, and as a Senior Scientist at Savvysherpa, Inc., a Minneapolis-based healthcare research & development firm. He has published in both methodological and clinical journals and holds several patents in the health monitoring space. He is a graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN with a B.A. in Mathematics and Economics. He received an M.S. and Ph.D. in Statistics from Colorado State University, and was previously Visiting Assistant Professor in the Statistics and Data Science department of Carnegie Mellon University.

Janeta is an innovation leader with over 20 years of experience in Research & Product Development. She is Director of Innovation in the World Without Disease Accelerator at Janssen and is co-leading a large digital and device-based cardiovascular clinical trial. Her career has spanned the Pharmaceutical, Consumer, and Device sectors, having worked on strategy and product development, clinical study design and execution, behavioral science related to digital health and solution development, and external partnerships. Janet holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering and B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

 

Jasmin Imsirovic

Jasmin Imsirovic

Jasmin Imsirovic is an Associate Director in Digital Health Sciences at Takeda where he advises clinical teams on the strategy and implementation of digital devices in clinical trials. His focus is on leading validation studies of devices, assessing new technologies and supporting teams in device selection and digital biomarker development. Prior to joining Takeda, Jasmin was a Principal Scientist at Respiratory Motion Inc where he oversaw algorithm and software development for an FDA-cleared respiratory monitor, as well as its implementation in clinical studies. He attended Boston University where he earned BS, MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering.

 

Jason Case

Jason Case

Jason Case currently serves as Vice President of Research & Development within Medtronic’s Patient Monitoring operating unit.

With more than 2 decades in the medical device industry, Jason has had the opportunity to research, develop, market and sell innovative diagnostic and therapeutic systems and devices in interventional cardiology, interventional oncology and patient monitoring.

Jason has successfully led R&D organizations driving best in class R&D vitality and effectiveness in support of Medtronic growth businesses in Early Technologies, Gastrointestinal & Hepatology and most recently in Health Informatics & Monitoring.

Jason holds Master’s and Bachelor‘s degrees in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Iowa.

Julius Klaas

Bottneuro aspires to become the premier provider of custom-made devices for diagnosing and treating neurological diseases, employing digital biomarkers, brain imaging, and neuromodulation technologies. To realize this vision, we utilize AI and customized 3D manufacturing technologies to create entirely tailored solutions for both patients and researchers. In 2021, Julius Klaas joined the Bottneuro team to spearhead technical development and currently serves as the Chief Technology Officer of the company. He has a strong interest in anti-aging technologies.

Kara Chappie is a Director and Research Project Lead within the Digital Sciences and Translational Imaging (DSTI) group in Early Clinical Development (ECD) at Pfizer, located in Cambridge, MA. She leads a team of scientists researching the use of acoustic (speech) signals to detect/monitor disease in remote clinical trial applications. Prior to her role at Pfizer, she modeled sound propagation for underwater acoustic applications. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering/Signal Processing from Yale University.

Lorelie H. Villarete

Lorelie Villarete, Ph.D. is manager of Clinical Affairs for Lingo, Abbott's consumer biowearables division. Since joining Abbott in 2021, Dr. Villarete has worked on Abbott's biowearables clinical development for both medical and consumer use. Prior to Abbott, Dr. Villarete has held various scientific, strategic, and operations roles from discovery to the clinic in the pharmaceutical, diagnostics, and medical device industries. Dr. Villarete is passionate in developing transformative products that help people live a healthier and fuller life. Dr. Villarete holds a bachelor's degree from Loyola Marymount University and a doctorate degree from University of California, Los Angeles.

Matteo Lai

Matteo Lai

Matteo Lai is the CEO and co-founder of Empatica, an MIT spinoff and pioneer in developing medical wearables and digital biomarkers for remote health monitoring driven by AI.

Through his versatile background and passion for design and healthcare, he has led Empatica in creating medical-grade technology that is driven by human-friendly design. Empatica’s products include the FDA-cleared Empatica Health Monitoring Platform and EmbracePlus wearable, co-developed with NASA and the HHS and used by some of the world’s top research institutions, and Embrace2, the only FDA-cleared wrist-worn wearable that detects seizures in people with epilepsy.

Matteo studied Engineering, trained as an Architect, holds a Double MSc degree in Architecture, and a Masters in Innovation Management. He is a DiMe contributor, and was named by Sifted as one of the top pioneers of the European startup world.

Mattia Lucchini is an Italian material scientist with a PhD in Physical Chemistry. He moved to Switzerland 8 years ago and after a 2 years postdoc at ETH Zurich, he joined Datwyler as a material developer. For the past two years, he has been responsible for the technology development of wearable sensors.
Mattia is passionate about BCI and wearable technology, and his research focuses on developing innovative materials and products in this field. He is particularly interested in developing wearable sensors that can be used to monitor and track human health and performance.

 

Pierre-Alexandre Fournier

Pierre-Alexandre Fournier

Pierre-Alexandre Fournier is an engineer, scientist, designer and entrepreneur, co-founder and CEO of Hexoskin, a Montreal-based company focused on clinical-grade wearable sensors and AI software for health and clinical research.
Hexoskin launched in 2013 the first iPhone compatible smart clothing for health monitoring, which won several international awards. In 2018 Hexoskin launched a remote health monitoring system for astronauts doing research aboard the International Space Station. Hexoskin products designed by Pierre-Alexandre and his team are now used by hundreds of research organisations around the world to collect medical data and push the boundaries of medical knowledge in real-life settings. Pierre-Alexandre is also an advocate for transparency in healthcare, patient empowerment, and healthcare innovation through design.

 

Sameer Dhamne

Sameer Dhamne

Sameer Dhamne serves as Director of Clinical Affairs at Neursantys, a company pioneering the development of wearable diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices. With over 15 years of inter-disciplinary experience in translational neuromodulation and neurophysiology research, Sameer’s work has focused on advancing novel clinical interventions for neurological disorders. Prior to Neursantys, Sameer has held scientific, managerial, and operations roles bridging the gap between research and development in academia, digital health, and medical device industry. He has authored over 100 publications encompassing peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and conference abstracts. Sameer holds Master’s and bachelor’s degrees in Biomedical Engineering.

Tim Callahan

Dr. Timothy Callahan is the VP of Scientific Affairs for Philips Pharma Solutions (formerly BioTel Research). He brings over 35 years of clinical research expertise to the position including research with the NIH and more than 30 years in the diagnostic testing industry. Dr. Callahan co-authored 3 patents in QT interval analysis and dynamical systems modeling of ECG data. He has authored many abstracts and publications as well as serving as the moderator for FDA QT-IRT – ECG Core Lab meetings. He is a frequent speaker at Pharmaceutical Industry functions.


 

Venk Varadan

Venk Varadan

Venk is the CEO & Co-founder of Nanowear, a commercial-stage, healthcare-at-home digital monitoring and machine learning diagnostic platform. Nanowear’s SimpleSense platform is the first-and-only monitoring platform powered by proprietary cloth-based nanotechnology, which continuously, simultaneously and time synchronously monitors and assesses the heart, lungs and central vascular and hemodynamic system by replacing first-line diagnostics tools.
Before Nanowear, Venk spent ~7 years at UBS Investment Bank, Citadel Investment Group and Wells Fargo Securities in New York. Venk spent ~ 3 years in product marketing and sales with both Lilly and Sanofi Pharmaceuticals in New York.
Venk received his MBA from Columbia University and his BSE from Duke University.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
