Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability: Active Protection Systems Focus Day

The SAE Media Group are delighted to announce that the 7th annual Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability Conference will return to the Copthorne Tara Hotel, London, with the main conference on the 16th and 17th November and our enormously popular Active Protection Systems Focus Day running on the 15th November.

As the only armoured vehicle conference dedicated to the area of survivability, the 2022 event will gather programme managers, capability directors, commanders from the military, senior engineers, chief scientists and platform managers from leading solution providers to discuss what nations are doing to protect their armoured vehicles and personnel.

Brigadier (Ret.) Ian Cameron-Mowat

Brigadier (Ret'd) Ian Cameron-Mowat works as an independent consultant in vehicle systems, electronic countermeasures, surveillance, and counter-terrorism technology; he is also a founding director of CSB Defence, a consultancy company operating across a number of technology sectors in defence and security. In both roles, he helps companies to find opportunities and win business. He has spoken at or chaired conferences on vehicle survivability and situational awareness,
robotics and autonomous systems, counter-drone and counter-IED. Ian went into officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1983. As a Russian graduate, he had a busy Cold War. After that unexpected success, he alternated between mainstream Royal Signals appointments and posts in equipment capability, security, and counterterrorism in the UK and with the United Nations. Highlights of his earlier career including waking up on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall the morning after it came down and spending his birthday with his Regiment up to his chest in the cold, muddy River Ouse when it flooded York in 2000. His final seven years in uniform were spent, first as a colonel and finally as a brigadier, heading Special Projects and Force Protection teams in the UK MOD’s procurement organization, Defence Equipment and Support. Among other areas he was responsible for the UK’s counter-IED systems, force protection surveillance and active protection systems for armoured vehicles.

After his doctoral thesis in physics on high-temperature MEMS in the cooperate research centre of Airbus Defence, he worked for 2 years as a research associate on the Development of a system to detect hidden explosives by Laser Ion Mobility Spectroscopy (LIMS)

In 2008 he moved to the department of missile warner systems and joined the project MUSS (Multi-functional Self-Protection System) at an early stage being responsible for the electro-optical components of the Missile Warner.

In 2016 he took over the role as Technical Manager of the MUSS for the MEDUSA TDP in UK, which also included the implementation and demonstration of MUSS on the Challenger 2 platform.

Since 2020 he manages the development of MUSS 2 - the next generation of MUSS.
Today he is the chief engineer of all ground based self-protection systems of the company HENSOLDT Sensors in Taufkirchen, Germany.

LTC Scott Coulson is a retired Armor officer, with tours as a tank platoon leader, scout platoon leader, tank company executive officer and tank company commander. He has also served in combat as a Cavalry Squadron Operations Officer in 4th Infantry Division in Baghdad in 2006, and was the executive officer and Regimental Deputy Commander of the 11th ACR, the OPFOR at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin. He has in-depth experience in mounted and dismounted maneuver warfare in all types of terrain as both a commander and trainer. He served as a team leader and operations officer in Afghanistan on the Counterinsurgency Advisory and Assistance Team, working directly for COMISAF and observing mounted and dismounted counterinsurgency operations in 3 of the 4 regional command areas. As a Battalion Commander he both trained Joint combat advisors from across the force to prepare them for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan, and also deployed as a Security Force Assistance Team leader while in command, advising Afghan forces in Kunar province while attached to a light Infantry Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division. He has thorough knowledge and understanding of combat vehicles, systems, maintenance and operations from his extensive operational career and has operated or led units equipped with M1IP, M1A1/A2 tanks, and M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicles. In his most recent role as Maneuver Branch Chief in Capabilities Development Directorate of the Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) LTC Coulson spent three years managing requirements for the Army’s combat vehicle fleet. His portfolio included both emerging initiatives and programs (MPF, GMV, LRV, GCV, AMP-V, Stryker Lethality Upgrade and Vehicle Protection Systems) as well as existing programs of record (Abrams, Bradley, Stryker, MRAP and Hercules). He worked extensively preparing leadership for Configuration Steering Boards, Weapon System Reviews, Army and Joint Requirement Oversight Councils, Capability Portfolio Reviews and advised leadership on key decisions, prioritization and resourcing. In this role he networked extensively within the Army and DoD, as well as in civilian industry and academia to gain a full understanding of various combat vehicle stakeholders, their interests, roles, positions and capabilities. He took an active role in the development, staffing and vetting of the current requirements for both MPF and VPS. He has also participated in live fire testing of active protection systems and vehicle underbody protection systems. He twice presented the maneuver force update at the National Ground Intelligence Center’s annual Threat Coordination Working Group, and has a full understanding of anti-armor systems, technology, proliferation, and tactics. He most recently assisted in writing, editing, staffing, publishing and implementing the U.S. Army Combat Vehicle Modernization Strategy (CVMS), and has made several public presentations on the CVMS and the implementation plan for it. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a B.A. degree in History, and has a Masters in Business Administration (with honors) from Arizona State University. He is also a graduate of the Defense Acquisition University Combat Developers Course (JCIDS).

Upon retirement he founded Mass XV LLC (mass x velocity = momentum) Maneuver Combat Systems Consulting focused on providing requirement strategy, business development, mission engineering, and other marketing services to firms who offer cutting edge technology for Army warfighters. Mass XV is a growing company, headquartered in Southern Virginia.

Mr Cagri Acar

Çagri Acar is the systems engineering team leader for active protection systems (APS) at ASELSAN Inc. He has been working at ASELSAN Inc. since 1999. He has started as a test and evaluation engineer and after 2004 he was appointed as a systems engineer. During his career, he has been involved in the development, testing and evaluation of Electronic Warfare (EW) Self Protection Systems, namely missile warning systems, radar warning systems, electronic countermeasure systems for the airborne platforms. Since 2014, he is the lead responsible for the development of PULAT and AKKOR APSs for the land platforms, mainly Main Battle Tank and Light Armored Vehicles. Çagri holds B.S. and M.S. Electronic Engineering degree.

Recognized as one of the most prominent Active Protection Systems (APS) Campaign Leaders, Dan Kalfus is a world-renowned Business Development expert and an entrepreneur at heart.
He is known for being a proactive leader as well as for building long lasting partnerships with Defence industry leaders.
After gaining unique experience via winning strategic contracts with the German Ministry of Defense (MOD) for the procurement of combat systems, Dan had lead the establishment of EuroTrophy GmbH and was appointed Managing Director of the company upon its foundation in March 2022.
As Managing Director, he plans to make EuroTrophy GmbH the European hub for APS and to further expand the deployment of such systems with NATO Forces.

Mr Tarkan Turkcan

Mr Turkcan has more than 31 years of active duty served within the Royal Nether-lands Army.
Within those 31 years, he has served at the Recon battalion, Air Assault Brigade, Tank battalion, Cavalry school, Combat manoeuvre development centre and the
Defense Material organisation.
Performed 5 missions and several additional foreign assignments.

He has a long history with the CV90, mainly for setting up the requirements as end user representative and responsible for the operational qualifications.

He has been working with BAE Systems Hägglunds since may 2022 as Director of the CV90 platforms at Business and Development. In this position keeping customer and future customer relations and setting up the strategy, research, and develop-ment on the CV90 platform.
Mr Turkcan is also taking part from BAE:s point of view in the CV90 user groups, personally being a representative in the 7 nation strong CV90 User Group.

William Hooper is a Principal Land Survivability Engineer within the Platform Systems division of DSTL. He is currently the technical lead for the Next Generation Electro Optical Sensor (NGEOs) for Land APS package, alongside a number of other enabling technology research packages. William has worked in the fields of Integrated Survivability, Vulnerability and lethality assessment, and test and evaluation during his career, but has predominantly specialised in the assessment and evaluation of Land based Active Protection Systems (APS).

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
