Aaron  Knoll

 Aaron Knoll is a Reader (Associate Professor) in Spacecraft Engineering within the Department of Aeronautics at Imperial College London, and Head of the Imperial Plasma Propulsion Laboratory. Aaron received his Bachelors of Aerospace Engineering (2003) and a Masters of Applied Science in Aerospace (2005) from Carleton University, Canada. Aaron was awarded his PhD in Mechanical Engineering (2010) from Stanford University, USA, where he was involved with the research of instability driven electron transport within Hall Thrusters. Before joining Imperial in 2017, Aaron worked as a post-doc researcher (2009 – 2012) and Assistant Professor (2012 – 2017) at the Surrey Space Centre, University of Surrey, UK. The focus of Aaron's research at Imperial is towards the development of spacecraft propulsion technologies using alternative propellants, and novel computational methods for modelling plasma systems.

He is approaching 20 years’ experience in the insurance industry, first with a law firm litigating insurance disputes, then working as Chief Innovation Officer in London for a major global broker. He joined Relm in 2024 to develop insurance solutions for the most forward thinking emerging industries.

Andy is a science and technology entrepreneur, financing and growing businesses seeking to commercialise research in sectors such as space, telecommunications and semiconductors. Andy is a scientist and engineer by background, with a Masters in Nuclear Physics and early career in satellite systems engineering and space imaging. He has worked with leading consultancy firms on technology development and £1bn mergers and acquisitions. Andy is passionate about growing the space economy, working with governments, research institutions and established companies to create attractive ecosystems for emerging space businesses. Andy is on the Executive Committee of UKspace and co-chairs the Space Exports Group.

 Dan has worked closely with over 100+ UK space start-ups over the past three years, providing technical, commercial and investment advice. He has worked on a variety of UK Space Agency projects including; training VC investors on the space sector, supporting start-up boot camps and organising pitch sessions for start-ups to investors. He delivers a range of consultancy projects for international space agencies in the areas of technical roadmaps, technical expertise, and commercialisation advice. He is a Chartered Engineer and co-chairs the TechUK/UKspace Position, Navigation and Timing Committee.

 Dr Gianluigi Baldesi is the Head of Ventures and Financing Office at the European Space Agency with 20+ years of business and technology leadership experience for future aerospace missions in a cross-cultural environment. In his experience in the Agency, he has served several positions in the Technical and Space Transportation Directorate including the Strategy Department under the ESA Director General.

He holds a PhD in systems engineering from Supaero and Sapienza University of Rome and executive MBA from Columbia Business School and London Business School.

 James Lesser is the founder of NewSpace Finance, a platform connecting investors with high-potential space companies and offering a CPD-certified executive program on space investment strategy. With 25 years in equity capital markets—raising over $1bn, primarily in natural resources—he brings deep experience in scaling capital-intensive sectors. He is a non-executive director of Mineral & Financial Investments Ltd. and an alumnus of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government and the International Space University. James advises space companies on funding strategies, market positioning, and investor engagement, helping bridge innovation and capital in the commercial space sector.

 Mark is the CEO and co-founder of Seraphim, an investment firm exclusively focused on SpaceTech domain globally. Seraphim launched the world’s first Space VC fund in 2016. Now operating Seraphim Space Accelerator on three continents, with >$350m raised for the seed stage alumni. Seraphim also operates a space growth fund, listed on the London Stock Exchange. Across these three elements Seraphim has built a portfolio of over 100 SpaceTech startups - the world’s most prolific investor in the space domain.

Mike Collett

Mike Collett

 Mike Collett is Founder and Managing Partner of Promus Ventures, a venture capital firm based
in Chicago, San Francisco and Luxembourg investing in deep-technology startups. Mike has
been a venture capital investor in software and hardware for more than 20 years. Mike has
served on numerous Boards of Directors, including Rocket Lab, Spire Global, ICEYE, Halter,
Lunar Outpost, Chef Robotics, Gauss Surgical, Recycleye, and others.
Prior to Promus Ventures, Mike was Founder and Managing Partner of Masters Capital
Nanotechnology Fund, a venture capital firm. While working at Masters Capital, a hedge fund,
Mike invested in private technology software and hardware companies. Prior to venture capital,
Mike was a Vice President in Merrill Lynch’s Mergers & Acquisitions group.
Mike holds a BA in Math and BA in English from Vanderbilt University. He also holds a MBA in
Finance from Washington University in St. Louis.
Mike and his wife Paige have four children and live in Chicago

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
