Dr Derek Paley

Derek A. Paley is the Willis H. Young Jr. Professor of Aerospace Engineering Education in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research at the University of Maryland. He is the founding director of the UMD Collective Dynamics and Control Laboratory. He served as Director of the Maryland Robotics Center (2019–2025) and the UMD Autonomous Micro Air Vehicle Team (2014–2024). Paley leads the UMD RoboScout Team in the DARPA Triage Challenge. Paley received the B.S. degree in Applied Physics from Yale University in 1997 and the Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Princeton University in 2007. Paley’s research interests are in the area of dynamics and control, including AI and autonomy for national security and public safety.

Dr. Chol-Bum “Mike” Kweon currently serves as the Program Manager for Versatile Tactical Power and Propulsion Essential Research Program (VICTOR ERP) at the Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. He has responsibility for leading and managing one of the ARL’s corporate programs in energy, power and propulsion technologies. He founded the Center for UAS Propulsion (CUP) in 2018.
Since Dr. Kweon joined ARL in 2010, he served as Propulsion Division Chief, Engines Team Lead, and Mechanical Engineer of the Vehicle Technology Directorate at ARL. Prior to ARL, he worked for Delphi Advanced Powertrain (Auburn Hills, MI), GM Powertrain (Pontiac, MI), GM R&D (Warren, MI), and Gas Technology Institute (Des Plaines, IL).
Dr. Kweon received both his Doctoral Degree and Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He holds the DoD leadership roles in Team Propulsion, Propulsion and Power Systems Alliance (PPSA), and Multi-Agency Combustion Research Coordinating Committee (MACCCR). He is also a member of the professional societies including the Association of the United States Army (AUSA), Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI), American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), and The Combustion Institute (Fellow).

Dr Priya Narayanan

Dr Priya Narayanan is the Chief of Autonomous Systems Branch within the Science of Intelligent Systems Division (SISD) at DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL). She provides technical leadership over basic and applied research in the areas of robotics and autonomous systems to advance the science of autonomy, robotics, and multi-agent teaming for air, ground, and unique mobility and whole-body manipulation platforms. She received her doctorate from the Mechanical Engineering Department at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), masters and bachelors from the Aerospace Engineering Department at University of Florida (UF), and Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) respectively. She was a National Research Council (NRC) Fellow at the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL). Prior to her current role, she was the Lead of the Intelligent Situation Awareness Team within the Intelligent Perception Branch at ARL, where she provided technical guidance for research in AI/ML-based scene understanding for autonomous systems, battlefield modeling for decision support, and aligning research activities of the team to ARL’s larger portfolio of autonomy and decision dominance. She has served as the Program Manager for “AI for C2 of MDO” Director’s Strategic Initiative (DSI) program that focused on development of AI-enabled systems for Command and Control of Multi-Domain Forces. She has also led key research programs in aerial and ground robotics including perception integration activities for the final capstone experimentation of Robotic Collaborative Technology Alliance (Robotic CTA) Program.

Lieutenant Colonel Adam J Hepworth PhD GAICD is a representative of the Australian Army in the United States, presently Liaison Officer to Headquarters US Army Transformation and Training Command. Previously, Adam led the Australian Army’s emerging technology program as Director of the Robotic and Autonomous Systems Implementation and Coordination Office. Adam’s military career has spanned roles including advanced and emerging technologies, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems and decision-science portfolios. Adam is an Expert Member on the Global Commission for Responsible Artificial Intelligence in the Military Domain (GC REAIM) and a Visiting Fellow at the University of New South Wales.

LTC Eric Sturzinger is a Network Systems Engineer (FA26A) who currently serves as the Director of Research and Engagements at the Army’s Artificial Intelligence Integration Center (AI2C) in Pittsburgh, PA, where he manages all academic, industry, and other external relationships as well as all fundamental research for the center. He previously served as Senior Data Engineer at AI2C where he led the Aided Threat Recognition from Mobile Cooperative Autonomous Sensors (ATR-MCAS) program. He earned a PhD in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University in 2025 with a thesis titled Survival-Critical Machine Learning, focusing on autonomous system survivability through continuous learning at the tactical edge.

A career Infantry Officer, LTC Black has served in leadership and staff positions through the Battalion level, most recently as the Commander of 1-26 Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
He has deployed on multiple occasions to include combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve.
Lieutenant Colonel Black is a native of Springfield, Virginia and is married to the former Dana Antolak of San Diego, California. They have four children, Kate, Julianna, Thomas, and Jacob.

Lt-Col Jochem Vlaardingerbroek has been in the Army for 25 years. Following graduation from the Royal Military Academy, he has done several operational functions in the fields of reconnaissance and operational intelligence, including three deployments to Afghanistan. More recently, he graduated from Delft University of Technology with a master’s degree in control engineering. Currently he is the commanding officer of the Dutch Robotics and Autonomous Systems unit.

Nathan Fisher

Nathan Fisher currently serves as the Chief for the Medical Robotic and Autonomous Systems (MedRAS) Division at the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC), a research laboratory for the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command (USAMRDC). Nathan is leading the MedRAS division in its mission to augment medical capability and capacity in pre-hospital settings through the application of emerging technologies in robotics and AI to rapidly bring the right expertise, tools, and supplies to the point of need. Since joining TATRC in 2014, Nathan has served as a Principal Investigator for several TATRC research and development projects, ranging from the forward deployment of telesurgical robotics to the use of unmanned systems as vehicles of opportunity to expedite casualty evacuation and medical resupply. Nathan currently leads a diverse team of researchers and engineers to build technical solutions to support prehospital casualty care through passive data collection and edge processing of AI/ML solutions to provide automated inputs to medical systems, such as patient documentation. Prior to joining TATRC, Nathan worked as a senior design engineer supporting the design and manufacturing of vehicle systems, including ground combat vehicles and commercial aircraft systems. He holds a M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering with a concentration on Robotics from Johns Hopkins University and a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland. Nathan was received the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal and Civilian Service Achievement Medal, the Federal Lab Consortium Excellence in Technology Transfer Award, and several FORUM Innovation and Disruptive Technology Awards.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
