Military Flight Training 2021 (Virtual Conference)

NEW DATES: 4th and 5th October 2021 | Virtual Conference

SAE Media Group are proud to present the 9th annual Military Flight Training 2021 VIRTUAL conference.

Military Flight Training aims to comprehensively cover the latest developments in fast jet, rotary, and fixed wing training, as well as national approaches to pilot development and technological advances to synthetic and live training programmes.

As new threats create more challenging and dangerous air operations, and NATO-aligned militaries see increasingly higher operational tempos, flight training and preparation must respond to these developments in order to prepare pilots for dynamic operational environments. This conferences provides the perfect opportunity for flight training professionals to gather and share their experiences to ensure that the pilots of the future are ready to fight and win.

Key Topics Include:

  • Fast-jet training
  • Rotary-wing training
  • Fixed-wing training
  • Synthetic and live training
  • Pilot retention and attrition reduction
  • Immersive technologies for flight training
  • Training platforms

Group Captain Martin Higgins joined the RAF in 1993 and entered pilot training at RAF Valley in July 1996. Selected to be a 'Creamie' Qualified Flying Instructor on No. 208(R) Squadron until November 1999, he then moved to RAF Leuchars for his first fast-jet tour on No. 43(F) Sqn, where he flew the Tornado FMk3. Martin conducted operations in Iraq in 2002 and 2003 as well as major flying exercises in North America and Europe. Martin was then selected to join the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, where he served for 3 years as a team pilot.

After promotion to Squadron Leader in 2005 and two international tours with the Team, he returned to RAF Leuchars in 2008 to complete a 2-year Flight Commander tour on No. 111(F) Squadron. During his flight commander tour, he was privileged to take command of No. 1435 Flight at Mount Pleasant Airfield, Falkland Islands.

In 2010, he conducted his first staff tour at Air Command as SO2 Joint Combat Aircraft where he was part of a team that developed the nascent Lightning II capability. Returning to the Red Arrows in 2011-2012 as Red 5, he was lucky enough to be part of the Team's involvement to celebrate the London Olympics and Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.

Promoted to Wing Commander in 2013, Martin then returned to Air Command in Capability Delivery where he managed the Defence Operational Training Capability (Air) and High G Centrifuge programmes. In 2014, his luck continued when he was selected to become Officer Commanding RAFAT at RAF Scampton until 2017. During this command tour he delivered the Team's first overseas tour to China. After successfully completing the Advanced Command and Staff Course at the Defence College Shrivenham, and promotion to Group Captain in late 2018, Martin returned to Air Command to become Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff Capability Development. Group Captain Paul Cole

Group Captain Paul Cole joined the RAF in 1991. His operational career was centred on the C130K Hercules, flying it, planning its operations and then running its training school. Paradoxically for a pilot, he has been deployed on the ground to Azerbaijan, Sudan, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. This phase culminated in being Officer Commanding Operations Wing and Chief of Staff for the RAF's largest base, Brize Norton. Here, he oversaw the 6000 strong Station's efforts on multiple contingent operations as well as the redeployment from Afghanistan and delivered the UK-French Summit for the Prime Minister. In staff, he has completed tours in Human Resources, Capability, Parliamentary Engagement and Strategic Communications, the latter two working at the political / military seam.

Joining the Directorate of Flying Training in 2019, he took on responsibility for the future development of UK flying training, aiming to widen and shorten the training pipeline. He is convinced of the role for simulation and technology in delivering this aim whilst also reducing financial cost and carbon use. He combines this role with being Chairman of the UK Armed Forces Cricket Association.

Away from work, Paul is married to Jenny, an MOD civil servant and has two children. A Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Barbers, he serves on their Charity Committee and the Lord Mayor's Livery Schools Link Board. From the latest generation platforms to the world’s most advanced pilot training solutions and unmanned systems, Leonardo Aircraft Division provides the means, as well operational and logistic support, to the Armed Forces in the most complex scenarios and in every type of mission.

Leonardo have taken part in major global military aircraft programs since the 1970s: starting with the AMX and MRCA Tornado to today’s Eurofighter Typhoon (in collaboration with BAE Systems and Airbus), the most advanced multi-role fighter currently available on the market. Another important international collaboration is the F-35 lightning II, the new U.S. Joint Strike Fighter.

It is more than 60 years that Leonardo Aircraft defines the state of the art of military flight training. The company’s twin-seat jet trainers have been operated by several air forces and produced in three continents since the 60’s. The Aermacchi MB.326, MB.339 and more recently the M-346 and M-345 with their Intergated Training Systems have been in the past and are still today the benchmark for military flight training.

Leonardo is a world player in Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space, developing advanced components to fully integrated systems and platforms.

    WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
