Future Armored Vehicles Survivability USA

The SAE Media Group Group are delighted to announce the first annual Future Armored Vehicles Survivability USA conference, taking place in Arlington, VA on the 26th and 27th September 2022.

Unlike any other event, the FAV Survivability USA conference is a meeting for the US armored vehicle community designed around a series of focused discussions on the strategies and technologies being adopted to enhance crew and platform survivability. As seen in recent operations, threats to the vehicle are increasing in both scope and size. With the continued proliferation of advanced anti-tank weaponry around the world, and as armed forces pivot to addressing near-peer adversaries, armored vehicle survivability is now more important than it ever has been.

As the only armored vehicle conference in North America dedicated to the area of survivability, this 2022 event will gather program managers, capability directors, commanders from the military, senior engineers, chief scientists, and platform managers from leading solution providers to discuss what the US Military and Industry partners are doing to best protect their armored vehicles and personnel.

This conference is a focused study on how to enhance survivability and addresses all layers of the survivability spectrum. Key capabilities that will be covered are signature management, situational awareness, armored and blast protection, C-IED, vehicle obscuration systems, active protection systems and an overall picture of integrated survivability.

Colonel Donald T. Braman assumed duties as the Armor School Deputy Commandant on 11 July 2022.
Colonel Braman’s education includes the Armor Basic and Advanced Courses, the Basic Airborne Course, Ranger School, the Cavalry Leaders’ Course, the Command and General Staff Officers' Course, and the College of Naval Warfare. He holds a Bachelor of Science from Norwich University “the Military College of Vermont,” a Master of Science Administration from Central Michigan University, a Strategic Leadership diploma from the University of Louisville, and a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College.

Colonel Etienne Gauthier

Colonel Etienne Gauthier

Col Etienne Gauthier enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces as an Officer of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineering (RCEME). Col Gauthier commanded at tactical level in the General Support Battalion Field Workshop and has been the 5 Service Battalion Commanding Officer. He participated in three build-ups training with the National Support Elements in support to Afghanistan OP ATHENA. He received the Meritorious Service Medal for his work in theater of operations.
He has held various positions in project management such as Canadian Special Operations Forces Equipment Acquisition Program Manager. He is currently the Director Armoured Vehicle Program Management.

Colonel Robert Carter III

Colonel Robert Carter III

Colonel Robert Carter is the Joint Project Manager for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Sensors. Colonel Carter is a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana and
has served in key leadership, medical research, program management, and command assignments. Prior to joining the JPEO-CBRND, Colonel Carter served as the served as
the Medical Research and Development Command (MRDC) Liaison Officer and Acquisition Advisor to Army Futures Command Headquarters in Austin, Texas. Also, he serves as the Consultant to the Army Surgeon General for Biochemistry and Physiology.
Upon completion of the Army Medical Department Officer Basic Course (OBC), Colonel Carter began his military career in 1998 as a Medical Service Corps (MSC) officer assigned
to the 4005th United States Army Hospital and 807th Medical Brigade. Follow on assignments include serving as a research physiologist at the United States Army Institute
of Environmental Medicine in Natick, Massachusetts; Science Attaché & Exchange Scientist at the Centre de Recherches du Service de Santé des Armées (CRSSA) in Grenoble, France; Research Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) as the Technology and Acquisition Advisor to United States Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany; Special Assistant to the Director of the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center, Fort Detrick, Maryland; Deputy Director, Executive Officer, and Department of the Army Systems Coordinator (DASC) for Medical Systems, Office of Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology), Pentagon; White House Social Aide to President of the United States; deployed as the Medical Operations Officer and Acquisition Advisor to Combined Joint Task Force Paladin, Kandahar, Afghanistan; Director, Pre-Hospital-Combat Casualty Care Research Program at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Army Product Manager at Program Executive Office Simulation, Training and Instrumentation (PEO STRI) in Orlando, Florida.
Colonel Carter received his PhD. in Biomedical Sciences and Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) in Epidemiology from the University of North Texas Health Science Center, Master’s Degree in Biological Sciences, Bachelor’s Degrees in Chemistry and Biology, and is a Distinguished Graduate of the U.S. Army War College (Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies) and was awarded the AWC Foundation Award for Outstanding Strategy Research Paper. He completed post-graduate studies at Harvard School of Public Health and published over 100 peer reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters.
Colonel Carter is married to Dr. Kirti Carter and are blessed with a 7 year daughter, Rajshri. The Carter family enjoys marital arts training all hold black belts in Taekwondo.

Colonel Timothy F. Hough

Col Hough received his commission in the United States Marine Corps in 1998. His operating force assignments include: Platoon Commander, Company Commander and Operations Officer, Second Assault Amphibian Battalion. He has deployed in support of OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM. Other assignments include: Operations Officer and Company Commander, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island. Operational Test Project Officer and Branch Head, Expeditionary Fighting Vehicle and Amphibious Assault Vehicle Test Branches, Marine Corps Operational Test and Evaluation Activity. Service Chief Fellow, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Team Lead, Product Manager Optics and Non-Lethal Systems. Team Lead Body Armor and Load Bearing Equipment, Product Manager Infantry Combat Equipment. Product Manager Distributed Common Ground System-Marine Corps (DCGS-MC), and Program Manager Infantry Weapons. Col Hough holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the Virginia Military Institute and a Masters of Military Science from the Command and Staff College, Marine Corps University, (2012), and a Masters of National Security Policy from the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resourcing Strategy (2018). He is a graduate of the Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resourcing Strategy, National Defense University. His awards include: Meritorious Service Medal (1 Gold Star in Lieu of Second Award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 Gold Stars in Lieu of Fourth award and a Combat Device for Valor), and the Combat Action Ribbon.
Col Hough assumed his present duties as the Program Manager for Advanced Amphibious Assault, Program Executive Office Land Systems in May of 2021.

Lieutenant Colonel Matthew W. Hohl

- Commissioned in 2004 as an Assault Amphibian Officer. (AAV Officer)
- Conducted three Operational Forces tours, 3-4 years each and 7 deployments, which included 3 deployments to IndoPacific Theatre, 1 OIF deployment, 1 OEF deployment, 1 OIR deployment, and 1 Marine Expeditionary Unit.
- Conducted three Supporting Establishment tours including 2 years at the recruit training depot in Parris Island, SC, 2 years at the Marine Corps Operational Test and Evaluation Activity, 2 years at the Amphibious Vehicle Test Branch, and finishing up second year as Mobility/Counter-Mobility Branch Head and requirements manager at Capabilities Development Directorate, CD&I, HQMC.
 

Major General Darren Werner

Major General Darren Werner

Maj. Gen. Darren L. Werner assumed the duties as the Commanding General, U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command, Army Materiel Command on June 12,
2020.
The command employs thousands of people worldwide and oversees a $30 billion budget annually. In addition to the command staff at the headquarters located at the Detroit
Arsenal, Maj. Gen. Werner oversees activities at the Integrated Logistics Support Center, four depots, two arsenals, the Army’s ground equipment supply chain, life cycle management, and sustainment efforts affecting active-duty Army units around the world.
His previous General Officer assignments include Commanding General, 13th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, Fort Hood, Texas, and Director, Strategic Logistics Integration (G-4/5/7), Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, G-4, United States Army, Washington, D.C.Maj. Gen. Werner’s brigade command was as the Commander, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command, in Germany and OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM, Afghanistan. His battalion command was as the Commander, 4th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas and OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, Iraq.
Maj. Gen. Werner was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant through the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps at Central Michigan University in 1988 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1989. He also holds a master’s degree in human resources from Webster University, Missouri, and a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, U.S. Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island.
During his career he has served overseas in Germany, Jordan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Korea.

Mr Aaron LaPointe

Countermine Division Chief, US Army DEVCOM C5ISR Center
Mr Aaron LaPointe

Mr. Aaron LaPointe has over twenty years of experience working within the countermine and counter improvised explosive devices (IED) technology world. As the Countermine Division Chief at the U.S. Army DEVCOM C5ISR Center, Aaron is responsible for leading, strategizing, and formulating how Army Science and Technology will advance technologies within the Army’s counter explosive hazard missions, including countering IEDs, landmines and minefields, and humanitarian demining. Prior to becoming Division Chief, Aaron served as the Program Manager for several Army Technology Objectives in the space of explosive detection sensors. Aaron has a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. degree in German graduating from the University of Rhode Island’s International Engineering Program. He also holds a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University.

Mr Keith White

Business Development Mananger , AeroGlow LLC
Mr Keith White

Keith joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in 1979. He enjoyed a 33 year career in the British Army including various operational tours. Army career highlights include a stint as a company commander as well as serving under US command on Operation Iraqi Freedom as the XO to the General Officer responsible for theatre logistics. Keith’s final assignment was as Requirements Manager within the UK MOD Protected Mobility Team. In this role he had responsibility for a fleet of blast protected vehicles including Cougar and Foxhound. In this post he was able to influence requirements to improve soldier safety.

Following his Army career, Keith worked as a Business Development Consultant before purchasing the Hatch Lighting and Orientation (HaLO) system and setting up AeroGlow International with his business partner Neil Ham. Over the past 10 years, Keith has travelled extensively, educating on the safety benefits of Emergency Egress Lighting Systems (EELS) in mitigating risks on armoured capability. AeroGlow International formed a US subsidiary, AeroGlow LLC, in 2016 to promote and sell HaLO in North America. HaLO is now fitted to around 6,000 platforms worldwide and is widely recognised as an essential safety component for armoured vehicles.

Keith spends much of his limited spare time watching sports, he enjoys Rugby, Cricket, NFL, Baseball and Hockey.

Mr Patrick Thompson

Technical Director, Survivability Evaluation Directorate, Army Evaluation Center
Mr Patrick Thompson

Patrick Thompson currently serves as a Technical Director within the Survivability Evaluation Directorate, U.S. Army Evaluation Center, U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command. Mr. Thompson has over 35 years of research, development, test and evaluation experience with multiple platforms and survivability domains. His current focus is survivability evaluation of ground- and air-based platforms, focusing on system characteristics that contribute to surviving the threat-contested environments of the modern battlefield.

Mr Thomas J Stafford

Deputy Director, Capabilities Development Integration Directorate, CDID, Manoeuvre Centre of Excellence
Mr Thomas J Stafford

Mr. Thomas (Tom) J. Stafford currently serves as the Deputy Director, Maneuver Requirements Division for the Maneuver Capabilities Development and Integration Directorate at Fort Benning, Georgia. In this position he supports the division in its role of defining required lethality, mobility, and protection capabilities in the modernization of U.S. Army combat vehicles, associated subsystems, and mounted mission command and mounted computing environment for U.S. Army brigade combat teams.

Mr. Stafford is a longstanding member of the Maneuver Capabilities Development and Integration Directorate joining it at its inception in 2010. Prior to the formation of the Maneuver Center of Excellence at Fort Benning, Georgia, he worked as a Supervisory Capability Development Specialist for the Mounted Systems Division in the Directorate of Combat Developments U.S. Army Infantry Center. Other Department of the Army Civilian assignments include a tour as a Project Director with Project Manager Training Devices in Orlando, Florida. Throughout his three decades of Federal service, he has materially contributed to the development, production, and fielding of several notable Army, Joint, and international projects including Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicles, Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, Mobile Protected Firepower, Infantry Squad Vehicle, Ground Vehicle Electrification, Royal Saudi Land Forces Sword Project and M1A2 Tank, Close Combat Tactical Trainer, Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainer, Bradley High Survivability Vehicle, Bradley Amphibious Capability Evaluation, and Bradley Optical Improvement Program.

Mr. Stafford holds a B.S. from North Georgia College, Dahlonega, GA and a M.S. from the Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL. He is a former Infantry officer serving in various command and staff positions with the 2nd Armored Division, 197th Infantry Brigade (Mechanized, Separate), and Army Materiel Command. His awards and recognition included the Department of the Army Superior Civilian Service Award, David Packard Excellence in Acquisition Team Award, and U.S. Cavalry and Armor Association Noble Patron of Armor. Mr. Stafford is a Certified Acquisition Professional (Level 3) in Program Management and member of the Army Acquisition Corps.

It delivers Emergency Egress Lighting Systems (EELS) for Military Platforms worldwide. The Hatch Lighting and Orientation (HaLO) System is a water, roll-over and blast operated emergency escape lighting system that has seen more than 10 years of active service. HaLO mitigates egress and drowning risks on numerous vehicles replacing the ineffective photo-luminescent tape often used to mark vehicle exit points.     WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
