Colonel Duncan Mann

Colonel Duncan Mann commissioned into the Parachute Regiment in 1999, and served in various regimental appointmnets in Sierra Leone, Northern Ireland and Iraq. He also trained junior soldiers ate the Army Foundation College Harrogate.


Following the Intermediate Command and Staff Course (Land) and simulation employment training he combined his engineering degree and infantry experience as a requirements manager in the training and simulation projects team in Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S). Colonel Mann then returned to regimental duty as a sub-unit commander including a tour in Afghanistan before running the Platoon Commanders’ Battle Course at the Infantry Battle School in Brecon.


Colonel Mann graduated from the Advanced Command and Staff Course in 2015; after a short spell as a staff officer in the MOD he took command of 2 PARA in 2016. In 2018 he returned to DE&S and was selected to promote and lead the Dismounted Close Combat Portfolio. From 2021 to 2023 he commanded the Land Regional Hub and British Army Training Unit in Kenya where he validated light role battlegroups and coordinated training and capacity building with allies and partners across east Africa. He assumed his current appointment as assistant head for ground manoeuvre in September 2023.


Colonel Mann is married with two young children. He enjoys military history, hill walking and running, though his times are slowing, and he is now an out of date skydiver.

COL Jeffery W. Jurand graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1998 and commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Armor. He initially served as both a Tank and Scout Platoon Leader in 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, TX. In November 2001 he deployed as an Assistant Operations Officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division to Kuwait as Operation Enduring Freedom began.


Following the Armor Captains Career Course, he then served as a Rear Detachment Commander and Assistant Operations Officer for 1st Battalion, 34th Armor, 1st Infantry Division at Fort Riley, KS. In June 2005, he assumed command of C/1-34 AR. In May 2006, C/1-34 AR tripled in size, converted to a motorized company and COL Jurand commanded the company during its subsequent deployment in support of OIF 06-07. Upon re-deployment, he transitioned into the Army Acquisition Corps.


In 2008, COL Jurand was assigned to the Army Research Laboratory at Adelphi, MD and served as a counter-IED Project Team Lead. There he led project teams conducting limited development and experimentation with both developmental and off-the-shelf technology and led initial fielding efforts in Afghanistan in support of Joint IED Defeat Organization’s (JIEDDO) efforts. In 2010 he was reassigned to Warren, MI where he served as an Assistant Product Manager for Mobility and Power Generation Systems in the Ground Combat Vehicle (GCV) Program. In 2013 he was nominated and selected for an assignment with the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) at Fort Bragg, NC. There he served as both a Product Director for Sensitive Activities and Chief of Requirements. COL Jurand assumed responsibilities as Product Manager, Heavy Tactical Vehicles in June 2016. In June 2020, COL Jurand was reassigned to the Pentagon and served as the Executive Officer to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology (ASAALT). In November 2020, COL Jurand assumed duties as Project Manager, Maneuver Combat Systems back in Warren, MI.


COL Jurand has a B.S. in Engineering Science from Vanderbilt University and an M.Eng in Project Management from University of Maryland, College Park. He attended the U.S. Army War College Fellowship at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, PA in 2019-2020 where he studied Cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Colonel Scott serves as Director Land Combat Vehicles Program, Australian Army and is responsible for the capability development, management and modernization of elements of Army’s Combined Arms Fighting System. An Armoured Corps officer with command and staff-level deployments to; East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bougainville, Israel, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt.

Colonel Scott holds a Bachelor of Management and Professional Studies, a Master of Management, in Defence Capability Development and Acquisition, and a Master of Arts in Strategy and Management.

Colonel Steven D. Gutierrez is the PM for DE M-SHORAD with 30+ years of service and 16+ years of experience in major defense acquisition programs. He has led within the Infantry, Signal Corps, and Acquisition Corps in garrison and field environments and during combat deployments.

COL Gutierrez served as the PM for Virtual Training Systems at Program Executive Office Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation, is a Senior Service College graduate of the National Defense University and was the Director for DCMA Americas.

He leads the U.S. Army’s flagship Directed Energy program at the Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office.

Col Hough received his commission in the United States Marine Corps in 1998. Col Hough holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from the Virginia Military Institute (1998), a Masters of Military Science from the Command and Staff College, Marine Corps University (2012), and a Masters of National Security Policy from the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resourcing Strategy (2018). He is a resident graduate of the Marine Corps Expeditionary Warfare School, the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resourcing Strategy, National Defense University. His awards include:

Kadir Elitok holds a BS degree in Aircraft Engineering and an MS Degree in Solid Mechanics. He has been working as an engineer and a leader in the industry for 25 years now and has been working on computational engineering, simulation testing and field testing in defense and automotive industries. He is currently working as a Product Validation Director in OTOKAR and leading the entire verification and validation processes for land combat systems and commercial vehicles being developed in the company.

Lieutenant Colonel James de St John-Pryce

Lieutenant Colonel James de St John-Pryce

With a passion for the role and challenges of reconnaissance, Lieutenant Colonel James de St John-Pryce commissioned into the Household Cavalry. He completed tours of Bosnia and two of Iraq as a junior officer.


At PJHQ, he was the J3 Joint Effects desk officer and then MA to the Assistant Chief of Staff J3 (Operations). He commanded C Squadron HCR in preparation for a tour of Afghanistan on Scimitar 2. He has been the Syria desk officer in Military Strategic Effects, Plans Officer for the European Training Mission in Mogadishu and Requirements Manager on the AJAX programme. More recently he was Second in Command of the Household Cavalry and the J3/Operations and Africa Team Leader for the Joint Force Headquarters on global crisis response. He assumed command of the Armoured Trials and Development Unit in August 2021.


Foremost are his passion for flying (fixed winged aircraft), speed riding (skiing with a small parachute) and reforming the Army's least useful anachronisms

Lieutenant Colonel Karlheinz Boenke

OTL Boenke, Karlheinz was born on the 7th of July 1963 in MUENCHEN, Bavaria, Germany. In 1984 enlisted in the German Army and started his military career in the Maintenance Corps. OTL Boenke attended the officer training from 1986 -1987 in ULM and HANNOVER. After having completed his engineering studies at the University of the Bundeswehr he served as a firing safety officer at the main training area GRAFENWOEHR from 1991


till 1992. Further on, amongst other posts, he served as logistics expert in the Army Material Office in BAD NEUENAHR, as a technical officer the Infantry Battalion 322 and as a commander of a training unit at the Technical School in AACHEN. He was deployed in the SFOR mission in 1998 as the technical officer of the Field Hospital RAJLOVC (BIH) and in 2006 in the HQ KFOR (KOS) as deputy JOC director.


Since 2012 OTL Boenke is assigned to the Army Concepts and Capabilities Development Centre in KOELN as the authorized army representative for the MRAV BOXER.

TC Marc Jason commissioned an Armor Second Lieutenant after graduating from the United States Army Officer Candidate School in 2006. During the course of his Army career, he has had numerous operational assignments at Fort Stewart, Georgia, Fort Hood, Texas, and Fort Bliss, Texas. After completing his most recent operational assignment as the Battalion Executive Officer in the 1st Battalion, 67th Armored Regiment, MAJ Jason assumed duties as the Armor Threat Integrator for Headquarters Department of the Army, G-2 in Washington, DC. Regarding his civilian education, MAJ Jason earned a Master’s Degree in Administration from Central Michigan University.

Military Experience:
Lieutenant Colonel Matthew Hohl is a native of Clinton, MA and was commissioned out of Saint Anselm College, Manchester, NH through the Platoon Leaders Class Combined Program in 2004. As a Lieutenant, he served in Camp Pendleton, CA as an Assault Amphibious Vehicle Platoon Commander (MOS 1803) with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, which included deployments to Okinawa, Japan, Operation Iraqi Freedom 5-07 as a Provision Infantry Platoon Commander, and in support of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit as the Amphibious Assault Vehicle Platoon Commander for Battalion Landing Team 2/5.

In February 2009 then Captain Hohl reported to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, SC where he served as a Series Commander and Company Commander at 3rd Recruit Training Battalion. Upon completion of his tour at the depot he attended Basic Airborne Course 10-11, followed by Maneuver Captains Career Course 03-11 at the United States Army Maneuver Center of Excellence, Fort Benning GA.

Captain Hohl returned to 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion, Camp Pendleton, CA in August 2011 and was selected to join 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), which included a six month deployment to Helmand Province, Afghanistan as the Reports Officer for the C-10 Afghan National Security Forces Development Cell. Upon his return in September of 2012 Captain Hohl assumed command of Company C and Company A and conducted two Unit Deployment Program deployments to Combat Assault Battalion, 3d Marine Division, Okinawa, Japan.

In July of 2014 Major Hohl reported to Marine Corps Operational Test and Evaluation Activity and took over the duties as the Amphibious Vehicle Branch Head and Operational Testing Projects Officer for the Amphibious Combat Vehicle.

Major Hohl was then given orders to be the Deputy Director, Amphibious Vehicle Test Branch in Camp Pendleton, CA in July 2016. While there he assisted in the developmental testing of the Amphibious Assault Vehicle Survivability Upgrade and Amphibious Combat Vehicle.

In July 2018 Major Hohl reported back into 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion, and was subsequently deployed on an individual augment billet to the Combined Joint Task Force, Operation Inherent Resolve, Baghdad, Iraq. There he served as the Reports Officer for the Directorate of Military Assistance. Major Hohl returned in March of 2019 and assumed the billet as the 3d Assault Amphibian Battalion Executive Officer.

In September of 2020 he was assigned as the Assault Amphibian Capabilities Integration Officer, Ground Combat Element Division, Combat Development Directorate, Combat Development and Integration. Lieutenant Colonel Hohl was promoted to his current rank on 1 December 2020 and assumed the duties as Mobility / Counter Mobility Branch Head and Assault Amphibian Capabilities Integration Officer where he is currently serving in Ground Combat Element Division, Combat Development Directorate, Combat Development and Integration.

Personal Awards: Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (sixth award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

Lieutenant colonel Riku Rantakari from Army Command Finland is responsible for strategic planning of infantry including armoured units. Earlier he has served in various duties from trainer to company commander in mechanised units and later as a battalion and mechanized battalion battle group commander. He has training for LEO2A4/6, CV9030, BMP-1/2 and T-72M1. He has also gained experience in arctic warfare and defence command (J) level tasks. Lieutenant Ccolonel Rantakari has MSc degree from Cranfield University, UK.

Lt. Col. Salvatore Bizzarro was born in BENEVENTO on 1St May 1979.


He commenced his military career in September 1999 joining the Military Army Academy in MODENA and subsequently the Application School in TURIN, from 2001 to 2004.


He graduated as Artillery Officer, and in August 2004 was assigned to the 7th CBRN Defence Regiment (CIVITAVECCHIA, ROME) where he completed all the functions related to his professional profile both in command activities and in staff service, participating in the following overseas/homeland operations:

  • 2005: Antica Babilonia (IRAQ);
  • 2006: Leonte (Lebanon);
  • 2009: Strade Sicure (homeland security);
  • 2009: Strade Pulite (homeland security);
  • 2009/2010: ISAF (Afganistan).

From July 2011 to August 2014 he served as Coy Commander of the 80th Regiment in CASSINO (FROSINONE).


From August 2014 to September 2016 he was posted to CIVITAVECCHIA at the 7Th CBRN Defence Regiment where he held the position of Staff Officer-Training Branch.


From September 2016 to August 2021 he worked at the Defence General Staff (ROME), as Staff Officer of the Capability Development Office.


In August 2021, he assumed the Command of the 1st CBRN Defense Battalion of the 7th CBRN Defense Regiment “CREMONA” in CIVITAVECCHIA for one year.


Since September 2022 he has been working at the Italian Army General Staff (ROME), as Head of one of the Force Development Sections.
 

Lt. Col. Salvatore Bizzarro has attended several courses in Italy and abroad, among which the following are worth mentioning:

Lt Col Tom Foss-Smith took up the role of SO1 BOXER Futures in September 2022 following a series of appointments in capability development which have reflected the evolution of the British Army’s embrace of BOXER and determination to optimize ‘the decade of Land’ to reverse the decline in land Manoeuvre and fires which has been tolerated since the 1990s. Tom has a background of service in Iraq and Afghanistan like most of his contemporaries, as well as peace-keeping operations with the UN. He has masters degrees in Battlespace Technology and Defence Studies, which focussed on precision munitions and hypersonic weapons.

He is the project manager of FIRAT-M60T Modernization Project, AKKOR, PULAT and KAMA Active Protection System Projects. He took part in both ALTAY Development and ALTAY Mass Production Projects.

I started my working experience with SAGEM on UAVs and metrology. After my preparatory class for engineering school, I moved to Brest where I get my pyrotechnics engineer degree at the ENSIETA (nowadays ENSTA Bretagne). TENCATE Advanced Armor give me the opportunity to do my best on a 6 months autonomous project to optimize and certify (using company knowledge, simulations and laboratory trials) mines protections solutions. Thanks to this experience and regarding my scholar knowledge on pyrotechnic phenomenon, I postulated at DGA TT Bourges where I am currently working as a protection expert mainly on active and reactive protection since 2012.

Mr Holger Niebel

After one year of military service as a conscript in the artillery, Mr. Niebel initially decided to study mechanical engineering at the University of Stuttgart. With a focus on design and metal forming technology, he initially started his career as a technology manager at an international manufacturer of seamless tubes. As part of a new plant construction in the USA, he was responsible for the commissioning of a stretch-reducing mill as process engineer. After having been the technical leader for the introduction of a non-contact inline hot tube inspection system, he became involved in the technical implementation of CO2-free tube production.

In search of ever new challenges, he decided to pursue a new career in the civil service of the German Armed Forces and has held the position of systems engineer LEOPARD2 since December 2022. He has thus also taken over the management of the German TROPHY APS for LEOPARD program. He is working to build up an expertise in the field of protection.

Mr Mark McNeil

Mr Mark McNeil

Mark McNeil, is a recently retired Cavalry Officer who has landed a second career as a federal Public servant as the Program Coordinator for the Canadian Army’s Land Engineering Support Center. He is responsible for the coordination of small group of specialist engineers across the military domains of Mobility, Sustainment, Lethality and of course Survivability in supporting the Army’s operational requirements.

Mark has extensive experience with APS trials and testing as Military Technical Staff Officer and continues to do so today in his new capacity.

He is one of the original founders of the NATO STANAG 4686 Team of Experts and currently the NATO Chair for this distinguished group.

His 25+ years of military experience with deployments to both the Balkans and Afghanistan combined with his degrees in the Military Sciences and Education have armed him with enough experience and information to be dangerous.

He is a Project Management Professional with extensive expertise as a Project Director with success in leading, managing, and empowering teams to meet or exceed organizational objectives in large scale and complex projects.

Mark is married with three children, He revels in military history and enjoys running, soccer and alpine skiing none of which he does very well.

Richard joined the MoD as a Technician Apprentice in Portsmouth Dockyard, then a range of engineering roles including helicopter design, gas turbine repair and quality assurance. Merged into the embryonic Defence Logistics Organisation before escaping to the Advanced Command and Staff Course then a range of policy jobs in Defence Logistics. Seconded to the 2010 Defence Support Review before again escaping to the NATO staff college. Returned to Defence Logistics then joined DE&S in a transformation role. Left the Civil Service then asked to return to help deliver the early stages of Defence Support Transformation. Now back working in the DE&S Future Capability Group leading on Additive Manufacturing.

Mr Turkcan has more than 31 years of active duty served within the Royal Nether-lands Army.
Within those 31 years, he has served at the Recon battalion, Air Assault Brigade, Tank battalion, Cavalry school, Combat manoeuvre development centre and the
Defense Material organisation.
Performed 5 missions and several additional foreign assignments.

He has a long history with the CV90, mainly for setting up the requirements as end user representative and responsible for the operational qualifications.
He has been working with BAE Systems Hägglunds since may 2022 as Director of the CV90 platforms at Business and Development. In this position keeping customer and future customer relations and setting up the strategy, research, and develop-ment on the CV90 platform.
Mr Turkcan is also taking part from BAE:s point of view in the CV90 user groups, personally being a representative in the 7 nation strong CV90 User Group.

Tom Newbery, Senior Principal Scientist at Dstl, is a Land survivability specialist in Dstl. He is the Technical Authority for the Land Survivability Analysis and Technology Development research project and Dstl’s leading expert on Active Protection Systems in the Land environment.


Tom has led MOD’s APS research since 2011, covering the Medusa soft-kill assessments, the development of the Modular Integrated Protection Systems architecture and various supporting research activities. Tom is now supporting the British Army’s procurement of Trophy APS for the CHALLENGER 3 programme.

He is a Chartered Physicist and has experience across optics, sensor systems, signal processing, systems analysis and explosives engineering.

As a Project Director Mrs Liisa Nevalainen is leading Common Armoured Vehicle System Programme (CAVS) and its management group. CAVS Programme is a multinational R&D and procurement programme for 6x6 armoured wheeled vehicles, led by Finland and including Latvia, Sweden and Germany. Mrs Nevalainen is also leading related subprojects of Finnish Defence Forces.

Prior current position Mrs Nevalainen has been FDF project manager of NORDEFCO's Nordic Combat Uniform System -project. Since 2010 Mrs Nevalainen has served FDF in different engineering, commercial, administrative and management positions, excluding 2012-2014 when she was working for the Finnish Red Cross as a Procurement Coordinator.

Squadron Leader Morris joined the RAF Regiment in 2000. His first assignment was as a Flight Commander on 26 Squadron with operational deployments to Op RESINATE SOUTH in Kuwait and Op TELIC I in Iraq. In 2004, he was posted to RAF Honington as the Ground Defence Training Officer and Officer Commanding the Nuclear Accident Response Team. After a second Op TELIC tour commanding an Iraq Department of Border Enforcement Training Team, in September 2006 Morris was amongst the first Bowman Signals Officers and assigned to 3 Squadron. During 3 Squadron’s Op HERRICK deployment in southern Afghanistan, Morris concurrently commanded a Rifle Flight and Support Weapons Flight.


On return from Afghanistan Morris joined the Bowman Training and Advisory Group (Joint), responsible for converting 3 Commando Brigade and 16 Air Assault Brigade units to the Bowman communication system. This role required a four-month deployment embarked on HMS Ocean whilst on attachment to 40 Commando Royal Marines. Following an extended Op HERRICK (LANSBURY) Afghanistan tour with UK Special Forces and the Security and Intelligence Agencies at the end of his Bowman role, in January 2012 Morris was posted to the Joint Counter-Terror Training and Advisory Team as the Pakistan High-Threat Team Leader on Op MONOGRAM.


Returning from two years in Pakistan in January 2014, Morris was posted to the Full Spectrum Coordination Cell in London, a joint Ministry of Defence and Security and Intelligence Agency body for whom he spent a year in the United States as Liaison Officer. Promoted to Squadron Leader in November 2015 whilst in the United States, Morris returned to the UK in January 2016 for his first OF3 tour as the Close Combat and C-UAS Capability Development staff officer at Air Command. In November 2018 he was assigned to the Defence Portfolio & Approval Secretariat as the Air Desk Officer, during which time Morris deployed for eight months with UK Special Forces on Op BLANCA in Afghanistan in a high-threat mentoring capacity. In October 2022 Morris returned to the CUAS world as SO2 C-sUAS in Army HQ Programmes Directorate, responsible for the delivery of Land GBAD Project 6.


Morris is married to Caroline, a consultant Transplant physician, and they have a son, Rufus, aged 7.

    The ABBS Active Mine Protection System (AMPS™) package is a suite of three systems designed to fully protect the occupants of an armoured vehicle from all the secondary effects of an under-belly mine.

    • Floor Shock. An active system very rapidly removes the vehicle floor from under the seated occupant’s feet, and from under any loose objects on the floor. The floor re-sets to its original position automatically and does not require any maintenance afterwards apart from replacing the energetic cartridges in the actuators.

    • Belly Plate Deformation. A simple passive system using composite reinforcement of a steel belly plate has been developed to minimise the deformation that occurs directly over the mine location. As well as protecting the occupant’s legs by eliminating contact between the belly plate and the floor, this also enables a reduction in the depth of the space that is normally left open between the belly plate and the vehicle floor. Reducing this space claim has significant benefits in terms of vehicle overall height and weight. A 12kg test to AEP55 at 300mm standoff resulted in only 80mm deformation very locally in the belly plate with no deformation at the edges of the belly plate.

    • Global Acceleration. The ABBS VGAM™ (Vehicle Global Acceleration Mitigation) system has been fully proven by testing in the UK during 2017 and in August 2018 by a large-scale test in the USA. The system can completely eliminate Global Acceleration due to the mine blast. The immensely powerful patented, easily fitted, lightweight, Linear Rocket Motor (LRM™) countermeasures initiate in less than 3ms after the mine blast and can deliver nearly all their impulse in another 20 – 30ms to counteract the mine blast lifting forces and keep the vehicle on the ground. The system is being evaluated and developed to TRL6 under a CRADA with TARDEC.

    • New Development – Active Belly Plate System – A new active system designed to counteract the initial high peak of the mine blast force/time curve is being developed. It is anticipated that the system will enable a substantial reduction in belly plate weight which can translate into full 6kg underbelly protection for light commercial vehicles such as a Toyota Land Cruiser at a reasonable weight and cost without the need to use the Linear Rocket Motors to control Global Acceleration.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
