SAE Media Group are proud to announce the 20th annual Military Airlift and Air-to-Air Refuelling conference and exhibition will be hosted in Lisbon from the 3rd – 4th December 2019, with an additional post-conference site visit on the 5th December.  

Developing on the 2018 edition, this year’s conference remains the definitive calendar date for the international air mobility and airlift community – providing crucial updates across the heavy & tactical airlift, rotary wing and AAR sectors.

As the world has globalised, the need to deploy and sustain forces from the air remains a mission critical enabler. Similarly, the utility of maintaining airpower through effective AAR has repeatedly demonstrated in recent NATO-led operations, including Operation Inherent Resolve and Operation Shader across Syria.

Delivering this capability, as asset costs rise, and budgets shrink remains a key theme for this year’s meeting – as pooling and sharing efforts continue to drive pan-European cooperation. Similarly, integrating commercial solutions into the combined effort and where this can provide the lowest opportunity cost continues to be explored.

Brigadier General Francesco Saverio Agresti

BG Francesco Agresti entered the ITA Air Force in 1984 and got his wings in 1989. He flew 2,600 flying hours, most of which on the AM-X in the AG and Recce roles. After several staff and operational appointments, amongst which the command of 32 Wing (Amendola AB) and the 1st Air Brigate Special Ops (Cervia AB), he was appointed to the EATC as Deputy Commander in November 2017. His domain of responsibility covers the full spectrum of air transport capabilities for all seven EATC participating nations - both operational and tactical. BG Agresti is married to Ms. Loredana and has one son, Stefano.

Brigadier General Pedro Alexandre Entradas Salvada

Brigadier General Pedro Alexandre Entradas Salvada is currently Director of the Engineering and Programs Directorate, for which he was designated in December 2018.
He was born in Beja, Portugal in January 1966.

He completed his master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Energy branch) from Lisbon University, Instituto Superior Técnico. He also completed a master’s degree in Aeronautical Sciences, at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in the USA.

He began his officer career in the Portuguese Air Force, in May 1990. After concluding the military and technical training at the Air Force Academy, he was stationed at the Weapon System Maintenance Directorate, where he served from 1995 until 2001, performing several engineering roles at the Quality and Engineering Department
Between 1994 and 1997, he was a teacher at the Air Force Academy, teaching Aerodynamics, Thermodynamics, Operational Investigation, and Propulsion Systems.

Between 2004 and 2007, he held the position of Portugal “Senior Country Representative”, representing the Portuguese Air Force at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, USA.
In 2006, he was granted as an Aeronautical Engineering Specialist by the Order of Engineers.

In 2007, he returned to the Weapon System Maintenance Directorate where he served as the F-16 Weapon System Manager, Engineering/Modification Coordinator for the F-16/MLU Program, Head of Quality and Deputy Director.

In 2010, he was appointed as the National Representative for the "Operational and Logistics Requirements" Sub-Committee of the F-16 Multinational Fighter Program; position he held until October 2017.

In 2013, he was appointed as F-16 Sale Program Manager, becoming the Head of the Program in March 2019.

He has several praises and medals, including an “Emblem of Honor” from the Romanian Air Force.

Brigadier General Pedro Salvada is married and has two boys.

Colonel Byron Newell

Colonel Byron Newell is Commandant of the Advanced Airlift Tactics Training Center at Rosecrans Air National Guard Base in St. Joseph, Missouri; working in concert with total force partners from Air Force Reserve Command and Active Duty Air Force to increase the warfighting effectiveness and survivability of mobility air forces. Col Newell entered the United States Naval Academy in 1990, becoming a Naval Aviator in 1996 flying the C-2A Greyhound. In 2004, he transitioned to the 139th AW, Missouri Air National Guard as a C-130H pilot. Col Newell has previously commanded the 180th Airlift Squadron and the 139th Maintenance Group.

Colonel James G. Young is the Commander, 86th Operations Group, Ramstein Air Base, Germany. He commands the largest and busiest C-130 and operational support aircraft squadrons in the Air Force, providing the European and African theaters with airlift and aeromedical evacuation support, to include combat ready air transportation, rapidly-deployable equipment, supplies and people. The 86 OG consists of six squadrons to include two geographically separated units and is home to more than 1,100 active-duty, Reserve, Department of Defense and local national civilians. The group operates C-20H, C-21A, C-37A, C-40B and C-130J aircraft.

COLONEL JAMES S. SPARROW Colonel James S. Sparrow is the Commander of the Strategic Airlift Capability (SAC) Program’s Heavy Airlift Wing (HAW), HDF Pápa Air Base, Hungary. In this role he commands the only multinational airlift unit in existence today executing a shared flight hour program by 12 nations (10 NATO and two Partnership for Peace) operating C-17 aircraft. The HAW supports airlift missions for the 12 SAC nations for national, NATO, EU, humanitarian assistance, airdrop and other national requirements. Members of the SAC Program include Bulgaria, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, and the United States. Colonel Sparrow received his commission from the United States Air Force Academy in 1993. He has served in a variety of positions at the Squadron, Group, and Wing levels, including Evaluator Pilot and Instructor Pilot in multiple different aircraft. Following attendance at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, after earning the Joint Planner Designation, he served on the staff of U.S. European Command in a variety of positions within the Directorate for Strategy, Policy, and Assessments including duty as the command lead for the stand-up of the SAC Progam program from 2007-2009. Following his first tour in Europe, Col Sparrow served as a C-17 Operations Officer during one of the busiest operations tempos in Mobility Air Forces history including a combat deployment with his squadron. After this he commanded the 37th Flying Training Squadron at Columbus AFB, Mississippi producing over 230 pilots yearly for the U.S. Air Force and partner nations in Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training and the International Aviation Leadership Program flying the T-6 Texan II trainer. After squadron command, he served as the Chief, Security Assistance Policy, International Training and Education for the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force, International Affairs (SAF/IA). In this capacity he was responsible for developing, coordinating and implementing policy to optimize the U.S. Air Force’s security cooperation programs with partner nations to include managing aviation and technical training courses, flying exercises and requirements for international partners. Prior to his assignment to the HAW, Col Sparrow was the Vice Commander, 3rd Wing, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska providing the commander, U.S. Pacific Command, trained and equipped tactical air dominance forces, command and control platforms, and strategic and tactical airlift resources for contingency operations to include interception of hostile forces within the Alaskan North American Aerospace Defense Command Region. He is a Command Pilot with over 6,500 flying hours in T-37, T-38, C-5, T-1, C-17, T-6, C-12, and E-3 aircraft.

Colonel Jurgen van der Biezen started his Air Force career in 1981. After graduating from pilot training in 1985 he flew the NF-5 and F-16 and was assigned as squadron commander and Deputy Base Commander Airbase Volkel.

In 2011 he switched to the Air Transport domain. He was assigned twice to the European Air Transport Command as Head OPS and Functional Division. As of 10 July 2019 he is assigned to be the first Commander Multinational MRTT Unit .

Col van der Biezen accumulated some 2,200 hours in the F-16 with a grand total of 3900 flying hours. During summer 2019 he will convert to the A330 MRTT.
 

Colonel Luca Tonello

Colonel Luca Tonello

Luca Tonello, born in Treviso in 1964, joined the Italian Air Force Academy in 1983. During his career he has acquired a great experience in air movement and operations management. He was graduated military pilot in 1988, serving in the 46TH Air Brigade, ITAF airlift unit, for 12 years and flying as G 222 (C 27A) and C 130J pilot. He was in charge as Flight Safety Officer, 2ND Squadron Commander and Director of Operations. From 2002 he worked in the IT Air Operations Centre as Air Transport Cell Chief. From 2004 till 2008 he was in Eindhoven NL at the European Airlift Centre than at the Movement Coordination Centre Europe as Deputy Director. From the end of 2008 till 2011 Col. Luca Tonello was the 41ST Anti-Submarine Warfare Wing and Sigonella AFB Commander. Next job was in the Italian Joint Force Head-Quartiers, joint, deployable, rapid reaction Command & Control centre, as Chief of Staff. At the end of 2015 he assumed the position of Air Mobility and Special Forces Command Chief Operations and Training in Roma-Centocelle AFB.

During his career Col. Luca Tonello took part into a number of real operations: Provide Comfort in Iraq in 1991, Humanitarian Assistance in Bosnia Erzegovina in 1992, UNOSOM I and UNOSOM II in Somalia from 1994 till 1995, Alba/Arcobaleno in Albania in 1997, in Kosovo and Timor East in 1999. For twelve years he operated in firefighting activity as G 222 pilot. In 2000 he flow the first ITAF C 130J from Lockheed Factory, in Marietta GA USA, to Italy. During the Libyan crisis in 2011, acting as Wing and Base Commanding Officer, he had to support several international task forces operating from Sigonella AFB, in Sicily. In 2017 he acted as Commanding Officer of the Joint Air Task Force of the Training Advise Assistance Command West of the NATO Mission Resolute Support, in Afghanistan, with the function of Senior Airfield Authority of the international airfield of Heart. He has 4.500 hours (including 200 in war environment) flying with SF 260, MB 339A, G 222, C 130J, C 130J-30, BR 1150 Atlantic.

For his job he has been awarded with several national and international decorations: the ITAF Meritorious Medal (silver), for his performance as Wing/Base Commanding Officer during the Libyan crisis, the Defense Medal for special meritorious effort (Kingdom of Denmark – Support to the RDAF during the crisis of Libya), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (USA) and others.

He wrote articles for Rivista Aeronautica and Sicurezza del Volo, ITAF official magazines, gave lectures and presentations for the ITAF College, Leonardo Company and other national and international organizations. He is member of the ITAF Project Team on C 27J Special Variants.

Col. Luca Tonello has a Politics Science Master University degree (University of Trieste), a Aeronautics University degree (Federico II University of Napoli), a Strategic-Military International Studies Master (University of Milano and LUISS G. Carli University of Roma). He attended the Joint Staff College in Roma in 2001/2002 and is qualified as Legal Advisor for Armed Forces.
 

Colonel Robert Shelton

Colonel Robert A. Shelton is the commander of the 100th Operations Group, Royal Air Force Mildenhall, United Kingdom. The 100th OG is responsible for the planning, scheduling, and execution of United States Air Forces in Europe air refueling operations, as well as the mission readiness, mobilization, employment, training and standardization of 15 KC-135R Stratotanker aircraft and 245 permanently assigned aircrew and support personnel. Colonel Shelton is a native of Roanoke, Virginia and entered the Air Force in 1996. He earned his commission from AFROTC Detachment 875 as a graduate of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets. He has previously commanded the 99th Air Refueling Squadron, 117th Air Refueling Wing in Birmingham, Alabama. He has also served in a variety of staff positions at Wing, Major Command, and Combatant Command levels. Prior to this assignment he served as Chief, Strategy Division, United States Transportation Command, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Colonel Shelton is a command pilot with over 2800 hours in T-37B, T-1A, C-5A/B, RC-135V, and KC-135R/T aircraft and has extensive operational flying experience in support of Operations ALLIED FORCE, NOBLE EAGLE, ENDURING FREEDOM, and IRAQI FREEDOM.

LTC Struzyna was born on the 27th of November 1961. He joined the German Air Force as officer cadet in July 1982.

Serving in different military training units of the German Air Force he proceeded to the rank of Captain. With the promotion to Captain the working environment changed from training and education to Logistics, with his first assignment as Squadron Leader of a Transportation Squadron in Bavaria.

The specialization in Movement and Transportation within the Logistic Services of the German Armed Forces led to assignments in the German Air Transport Command, the Railroad Commanders Office and the German Armed Forces Command USA/CA.

For 26 years he has been working in finding transportation solutions for military needs, in all modes of transportation in consideration of the whole supply chain, to support and ensure operations and missions worldwide.

LTC Harald Struzyna is currently Section Chief of the Air Transport Section in the German Logistics Centre in Wilhelmshaven Germany.

Lieutenant Colonel Jakob Valstad, Norwegian Army is the Chief of Operations in Movement Coordination Centre Europe (MCCE) assigned to Eindhoven July 2016. Responsible for operational branch in MCCE to coordinate and optimize all 28 member nations strategic capabilities within Air, Sea, Inland Surface transport and Air to Air refuelling for operations, exercises and routine requirements.
Lieutenant Colonel Valstad joined the Norwegian Armed Forces in 1984. As a Logistic officer, he has taken part in various positions in Logistics nationally and also in numerous of operations abroad assuming various levels of responsibility.
He have 9 deployments in total more than 6 years in different operations led by NATO, UN and Coalition of willingness (Lebanon, Kosovo, Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan and South Sudan).
 

Mr Alexander Sander Schnitger

Mr Alexander Sander Schnitger

Sander Schnitger is Regional Director of Europe and Israel for International Government Services for Boeing Global Services. International Government Services (IGS) partners with Boeing’s Commercial and Defense businesses to provide focused, value-based solutions to meet the services needs of customers around the world, regardless of the aircraft’s manufacturer.
Schnitger leads an empowered and collaborative IGS team as an agile, pioneering, and growth focused ‘Service’ provider of choice for Boeing and Non-Boeing platforms in Europe and Israel. He reports to Torbjorn (Turbo) Sjogren, vice president of International Government Services (IGS) for Boeing Global Services (BGS).
Prior to joining Boeing, Schnitger was an honored member of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, retiring in July 2016 with rank of Lieutenant-General after Commanding the Air Force from March 2012 to June 2016 with a focus on continual improvement through LEAN methodology, social, technological and cultural innovation and the use of contemporary leadership styles.
Prior to command of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, Schnitger was Director of Plans and Policy for the Chief of Defence (CHOD) office of the Armed Forces of the Netherlands; Air Force Director of Operations; and Base / Wing Commander at Volkel Air Base in the Netherlands.
Schnitger was trained as a pilot at Sheppard Air Force Base in Texas, receiving his pilot wings in 1984. He began his military career in 1979 at the Royal Military Academy in Breda. Schnitger is a native of Rotterdam, married and has two sons.

Mr Eduardo Munhos de Campos

Eduardo serves as Vice President of Product Solutions and Sales Engineering of Leonardo Aircraft, being responsible for the technical, commercial and strategical support to worldwide sales campaigns for Leonardo fixed wing products.
With more than 35 years of experience in aviation, Eduardo has a degree as Mechanical Engineer and as Flight Test Engineer with several courses on strategy, international trade and sales.
He joined Embraer in Brazil in 1982 as a flight test engineer for both military and civilian products, worked in this position for 10 years and then moved to the commercial area where he spent more than 20 years of hands-on experience in strategic planning, business and product development, opening new markets and retaining existing clients in both defense and civilian markets
He joined Leonardo Aircraft Division in 2013, as Vice President of Business Development working with the development of strategies and international cooperation. He , later, was appointed Senior Vice President, Commercial, in SuperJet International, a Joint Venture between Leonardo and Sukhoi Company, being responsible for the commercialization of the SuperJet 100 seat airliner for the market in the Americas, Europe, Africa and Middle East. In 2016 he joined the military market for proprietary products in Leonardo first as responsible for worldwide International Sales and recently, in 2019, as Vice President for Product Solutions and Sales Engineering.
In this position, he has responsibility of supporting all international campaigns for the entire Leonardo Aircraft line of products covering technical, financing and strategical aspects.
 

Mr Franck Verdierre

Mr Franck Verdierre

Franck Verdierre joined the French Air Force Academy in 1988.
As a military transport pilot (C160), he has taken part in numerous civilian and military operations. He has logged 5500 FH.

He left his squadron as squadron commander in 2007 and has been then involved in multinational projects:

  • Project officer in the European Air Transport Command Implementation Team.
  • Deputy Head of the EATC Functional Division, supervising projects and studies related to the improvement of interoperability in all areas of air transport.
  • In charge for 2 years of managing French participation:
  • in the MCCE, SALIS, SEOS, MSSC and ATARES organisations, contracts and arrangements.
  • in Movement & Transportation related meetings and projects in NATO and in EDA.
  • Assigned to the Movement Coordination Centre Europe as Director of this organization.

He has left the French Air Force as a 10 years’ experience Colonel to start to work in the NSPA as Transportation & Warehousing Division Chief in July 2018.
 

Mr Graham Grice

Mr Graham Grice

Graham served 31 years (1982 to 2013) in the Royal Air Force (RAF), starting his career as an Air Cartographer. Commissioned in to the Supply Branch (latterly the Logistics Branch) in 1987, he specialized in; Petroleum, Movements and Transportation, Explosives and Inventory Optimization using Mathematical Modelling and Simulation. Graham gained an MSc in Defence Acquisition Management in 2005 and he has been a member of the Institute of Logistics and Transportation for over 20 years.

During his long RAF career Graham has served tours in Germany (x3) and Italy (x2) and has been deployed on Operation TELIC as OC (SO2) Force Movement Control Centre (Air), charged with the extraction of British Forces from Iraq at the end of operations, as well as staffing the move of air transport operations to a new operating base in UAE. Additionally, he was deployed to Italy as Deputy Head (SO1) of the Support Division and the Head of A4 Logistics Operations at the HQ Air Component Command for Operation UNIFIED PROTECTOR (known as Operation ELLAMY in the UK) until after the end of operations. Graham has served with NATO on a number of occasions, his final tour in the RAF being at NATO Air HQ Ramstein where he undertook the role of Section Chief (SO1) Movements and Transportation within the A4/6 Division. Here Graham was extensively involved in live flying and simulated exercise planning and execution, including Exercise Ramstein Rover in the Czech Republic during 2012.

On leaving the RAF in 2013, Graham started his own business, Black Boar Consulting Limited, working on a number of projects. These included Cuerden Consulting Limited as Subject Matter Expert for the development of logistics training courses for BAe Systems and then subsequently presentation of those courses. Additionally, he was contracted by Newman and Spurr Consulting Limited to provide battlefield simulation for the Joint Warfare Support Team on a number of Joint Force HQ (PJHQ) exercises.

Graham joined World Fuel Services (WFS) in 2015 as the Military Account Director covering activities related to the UK Ministry of Defence, as well some NATO and rest of the world activity. Graham has been successful in leading winning bid teams and working on a number of operational proposals, as well as developing company strategy relating to the relationship and collaboration with the military customer.

Graham is married and has 2 children and lives in Rochester, Kent. Still involved with the RAF through his involvement with a number of military charities, notably the Royal Air Forces Association and the Royal International Air Tattoo, he also enjoys skiing and classic cars.
 

Mr Ioannis Papachristofilou

Mr Ioannis Papachristofilou

Ioannis Papachristofilou was appointed Head of Marketing of Airbus Defence & Space in 2016. In this role he has responsibilities across the portfolio of products, services and solutions that Airbus DS offers to customers around the world. Previous to this role, he served as Head of Corporate Marketing for one year, overseeing market and business analysis as well as stakeholder marketing.

In the past, he held positions in programme management in the Eurofighter consortium, led proposals & contracts teams for international business, worked in sales support for export business, and started his career in preliminary design for military aircraft. He has studied aerospace engineering in the Technical University of Munich.
 

Mr Jan Der Kinderen

Mr Jan Der Kinderen

After being active duty in the Royal Netherlands Air Force for 34 years as a Logistics Officer and Project Manager, he made a career switch on 1 February 2019 to join NSPA as System Manager for the Multi-role Tanker Transport Fleet (MMF). As System Manager he is responsibility for the overall performance of the A-330 MRTT’s in the MMF, where his current focus lies with supporting the Multinational MRTT Unit and arranging the follow-on support, where the acquisition of the aircraft is handed over to OCCAR.

Mr Joao Alexandre Paulo De Morais

Mr Joao Alexandre Paulo De Morais

I am João Paulo, Portuguese civilian, specialised in military logistics and defence resources management. I am currently working as the Head of a Project and Logistics for private contractor called Westlake Corporation in Lisbon.
I have previously worked at the NATO Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers of Europe (SHAPE), at the J4 Logistics and Operations Planning Branch. I was mainly responsible for supporting the J4 branch in the management of the Afghanistan National Trust Fund (ANA TF) and capability development of the Afghan Forces. I also provided backing in terms of monitoring the logistics sustainment to the NATO troops in the Theatre of Operations (TOs) in the various missions. This assignment was very insightful and allowed me to comprehend the military planning from a strategic perspective.
Subsequently, I was given the opportunity to continue my assignment at the NATO Land Command Forces (LANDCOM) in Izmir, Turkey. I was part of the G4 Logistic Planning Division, responsible for supervising and support the Allied Command-Operation (ACO)Optimisation Program. I also supported the branch during the exercises Loyal Lance and Trident Lance, that culminated into the LANDCOM Full Operational Capability (FOC) certification.
I hold a degree in Global Development and International from Leeds Beckett University and a post-graduate degree in Defence Resources Management for Senior Officials from the Romanian National Defence University and also Planning, Program and Budgeting System for Defence Resources.
I have previously attended the International Conflict Management (ICM) and Senior Course on Security Policy in Europe (SPIE) courses at the Swedish Defence University. I hold a certificate in Strategic Logistics and Movement Logistics and Operational Planning courses from NATO School in Oberammergau in Germany. Mr Jose Gustavo

Jose Gustavo has more than 20 years of background on aviation related activities with strong focus on Program Management and International Complex Business Development and Sales Activities.
After graduating in Aeronautical Engineering from the Portuguese Air Force Academy in 1997 he was assigned as F-16 Program Manager by Portuguese Air Force at Lockheed Martin in Fort Worth, Texas, USA.
He then joined the Air Force F-16 Fleet Management team where he held different positions and levels of responsibility.
Between 2007 and 2010, as a Major, he served at NATO Headquarters of the Allied Air Component Command for Southern Europe in Izmir, Turkey with responsibilities in Operational Logistics, TACEVAL instructor and mentor and Allied Nations Air Power Capabilities Evaluator.
The last position held in the military was as a LtCol in the Portuguese Air Force Air Staff conducting several studies to the Portuguese Air Force Commander and Minister of Defense.
In 2013, Jose Gustavo joined the private sector. First in OGMA as Business Development Manager for MRO Services and a few months later as Business Development Director in Embraer Defense and Security for Europe, Africa and Middle-East. He currently maintains this position for Europe and North Africa focusing on C-390, A-29 Super Tucano and Special Mission Aircraft.
 

Mr Julian Stinton

Mr Julian Stinton

Julian Stinton retired as a senior commander and operational pilot in the Royal Air Force after 35 years’ service. He ran the UK Air Warfare Centre and amongst other roles, was responsible for the Air Test and Evaluation of all aircraft platforms, weapons, sen-sors, systems and their operational employment. This included new capabilities such as Airbus MRTT and A400M; the operational enhancement of UK C-17 and C-130 for deployed operations; as well as aerial delivery and air portability. He runs his own business, works internationally and is Group Military Business Director for TLD Group - the leading OEM for ground support equipment glob-ally. TLD specialises in the design, manufacture and fielding of deployable military air cargo loaders, as well as the operational de-velopment of K-Loader capability, techniques, procedures and through-life support.

Mr Laurent Donnet

Mr Laurent Donnet

Laurent Donnet is a colonel in the Belgian Air Force Reserve and as aviation expert working as a freelance consultant since November 2016.
He joined the Royal Military Academy in 1985 and graduated as a military pilot in 1990. He served as an F16 fighter pilot from 1991 till 2007 and totalizes 2100 Hrs on the aircraft. Throughout his flying career he occupied several positions, finishing as a squadron commander in 2005. He participated to Operation Allied Force in 1999 over Kosovo and was detachment commander of the first Belgian detachment in Kabul in 2005. 
After his operational assignments, he attended Staff College in Paris and worked at the Strategy Department of the Belgian Joint Headquarters in the Capabilities Development Branch as air expert.
He then joined the European Defence Agency (EDA) in April 2009 and stayed until October 2016. First, as Project Officer in Deployability where he dealt with strategic air and sea lift issues, then as Programme Manager for Airlift and AAR. He was in charge of several projects, out of which EDA’s European Air Transport Fleet partnership signed by twenty Member States in 2011. He also led the C27J and C295 projects and several AAR initiatives like one dealing with A400M AAR role equipment as well as one regarding AAR clearances and certification. In 2012 he initiated an AAR project that resulted into the now well-known Multinational MRTT Fleet.

Mal has over 42 years of experience in the aviation industry progressing from being a pilot to holding senior airline management roles in Australia

Mal became a Senior Lecturer at Griffith University and taught Airline Management and Airline Economics at Masters level for over 13 years.

As well as holding an Aviation Masters Degree, Mal is a highly accredited Lead Auditor who has conducted audits in Iraq, for the US DoD and also in the Pacific for the Australian Defence Force and Federal Police.

In 2009 Mal spent 4 years in Denmark managing the airlift requirements for Afghanistan on behalf of the Danish Defence Force.

Governmental Account Manager, Mission Planning Division of Jetex Flight Support in France. Degree in International Relations and Master's Degree in Logistics. Before joining Jetex, he served in the Argentine Air Force as well as in the Ministry of Defense. In addition of his work in Jetex, he performs tasks as Volunteer Firefighter in the French Fire & Rescue Corps.

Having direct experience within the airline, OEM and MRO sectors, Nigel has 40 years’ experience of all aspects of aftermarket support.  He is Six Sigma Green Belt certified and has previously held UK Civil Aviation Authority licensed aircraft engineer status.  He also holds an MBA from Bournemouth University.

Nigel started in aerospace as an aircraft technician with the airlines, rising through field service representation and service engineering management to roles of progressive seniority in global aftermarket organisations from AlliedSignal, Honeywell, Lufthansa Technik to Meggitt.

Nigel joined the AJW Group in March 2019 and will be responsible for global sales.

Philippe Martou took up his duties as Director of the United Nations WFP Aviation Services on 01 June 2019, after serving as WFP’s Chief of the Preparedness Branch.
Philippe moved back to Rome HQ after years as WFP Coordinator, Head of Area Office or Emergency Coordinator in Eastern DRC, Darfur, Nepal and North-Eastern Nigeria.
Philippe joined WFP in 2001 in DRC and served afterwards in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq, He deployed to many sudden onset Emergencies such as the 2004 Tsunami in Banda Aceh, Lebanon, Pakistan, Myanmar, Haiti, the Philippines, Kenya and others.
 Philippe holds a degree in Aeronautical engineering, a Masters in Social and Military science and has several certificates in the aviation industry in Belgium and USA.
In the Belgian Air Force, Philippe flew the C-130, totalling more than 5500 flying hours and participated in several Peace Keeping and Peace Enforcement Operations, such as the Gulf War, Bosnia & Kosovo, Somalia, Rwanda, Zaire, as well as Humanitarian Airlift and Airdrop deployments in Somalia, South Sudan, Kenya and Angola.
 

Mr Simon Johns

Mr Simon Johns

Simon Johns was educated at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst. He has served as an infantry officer in the British and Australian Armies in a wide range of appointments, and on operations around the world. He is a graduate of the UK Joint Services Command and Staff College and holds a Masters Degree in Defence Studies.
Simon has extensive experience on the equipment procurement staff across a range of capabilities. These include the procurement and sustainment of IT systems, soldier modernisation programmes, and mounted and dismounted combat systems.
Before joining Embraer, Simon worked for Lockheed Martin as the business development lead for a range of armoured vehicle opportunities. He was also responsible for growing the Ground-Based Air Defence C4i portfolio worldwide.
Simon is now responsible for promoting Embraer’s portfolio across Europe and Africa. This includes the C-390 Millennium Multi-Mission Tactical Airlifter; the A-29 Super Tucano Light Attack & Advanced Trainer; and the C4i, Space, Sensor and IT technologies offered by Embraer’s subsidiaries; Savis, Visiona and ATech.

Ms. Michelle J. Toma is the New Business Section Chief of the International Legacy KC-135 Tanker Branch, Legacy Tanker Division, Tanker Directorate, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma. She is responsible for the management of Acquisition Programs to support our KC-135 aircraft security assistance partners. For these 4 member nations, 28 aircraft and $140M program, she provides clear strategies of a Total Package Approach ensuring Partner Nation readiness, providing opportunities for support items, training and services from the U.S. Ms. Toma began her federal career in 2007 as an Information Technology Project Manager for Defense Logistics Agency at Tinker AFB, OK. In 2010, she transferred to the Legacy Tanker Program Office, where she served as project manager for both the KC-10 and KC-135. She has successfully implemented over 18 acquisition modifications on Legacy Tankers, totaling over $1B in investment funds. In 2016, Ms. Toma served as the Subject Matter Expert and Program Lead for USAF KC-135 modifications. In 2017, Ms. Toma transitioned to Foreign Military Sales as Supervisor for New Business, where she currently serves.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
