SAE Media Group are proud to announce the 6th annual MilSatCom USA conference, returning on 22nd-23rd June 2022.

Featuring in-depth presentations from all branches of the military, numerous critical government agencies and leading industry SATCOM providers, the conference will delve into the most important topics and discussions around MILSATCOM. This year’s forum will analyse several pressing topics including emerging US space policy, SATCOM resiliency and redundancy, USSF and US Army SATCOM acquisition plans, and expeditionary SATCOM for the Warfighter.

As well as bringing together the US MILSATCOM community, the conference will bring in some of the most dynamic and innovative international militaries to provide their unique perspectives; no other event in the USA offers the same number of opportunities to meet, discuss and network with opposite numbers from allied nations.

Captain Phil Coope

Phil joined the Royal Navy in 1993 having graduated from the University of Liverpool in Electronics and Communication Engineering. Twenty-eight years later he was delighted to accept the role of Deputy Head Space at UK Strategic Command, leading the Capability Development of Satellite Communications (SATCOM) and Position Navigation and Time. This is his second assignment in the Space Sector having previously worked as and Capability Manager for SATCOM and Programme Manager for Skynet 6.

Phil has been engaged in numerous major projects, notably delivery and acceptance of HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH Aircraft Carrier. He has also described the then future Royal Navy short-range air defence missile and radar systems, generated lifing policy for Defence ordnance, munition and explosives and contributed to the education of junior Royal Navy Officers at the Joint Services Command and Staff College.

Phil has served on T21, T22 and T23 class of Frigates and conducted UK and multinational operations in the North Atlantic, Caribbean, Mediterranean and Arabian Gulf. He also served in Hong Kong for territorial integrity and anti-smuggling operations and conducted media operations in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

Phil, together with his wife, son and dogs, live in the Gloucestershire countryside. When he isn’t making his way down the endless list of jobs to do around the house, he enjoys the outdoors, keeping fit and is the chair of the Royal Navy Rowing Association.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Shawn E. Petermann is in his 24th year of service in the United States Army. Throughout CW4 Petermann’s career he has served in numerous assignments ranging from M1A2 crewman to Senior Technical Advisor and he is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, with numerous deployments in support of both. His most notable assignments include 86th Signal Battalion, 3rd Signal Brigade (OIF 2006-08), the Joint Communications Unit (2012-18) and most recently the Joint Communication Support Element (Airborne) where he currently serves as the Technical Director, Innovation and Modernization. Additionally, his current concentrations include Strategic Vision 2025, posturing JCSE for Joint All-Domain Command and Control and integrated CEMA/EW capabilities into tactical baseband, all while following the DoD and Service specific technology trends.

Dr Rod Miller

 Dr. Rod Miller serves as is the Chief Mission Architect for the Lockheed Martin Military Space Line of Business. In this role, he serves as the  “chief disruption officer,” focusing on identifying and cultivating disruptive technologies, processes, and relationships supporting current and future customer needs. He works closely with Lockheed Martin’s internal research organizations across all business areas as well as small businesses, academia, and government laboratories to identify and exploit disruptive technologies in support of the warfighter. 

 
A former member of the U.S. Government’s Senior Executive Service, he was the Senior Leader Chief Scientist for Air Force Global Strike Command at Barksdale Air Force Base. In this role, he worked directly for the four-star general officer Commander and worked closely with senior science, technology, and nuclear operations leaders to advocate for science, technology, and innovation supporting the Air Force Nuclear Enterprise as well as conventional strike (including hypersonic technology).
 
Dr. Miller retired as a Colonel from the U.S. Air Force. As a commissioned officer he held numerous leadership positions in the space and nuclear acquisition and space operations communities. He served in key engineering positions for both the Milstar and Space Based Infrared System as well as leading the Advanced Extremely High Frequency Program in support of the United States Nuclear Command and Control System. He commanded the Space Development Squadron which delivered key capabilities for the Department of Defense Space Test Program. He also served as the Military Assistant to the Air Force Chief Scientist where he worked closely with the entire Air Force and national science and technology community.
 
Following his Air Force civil service, he served as Purdue University’s Special Advisor for National Security Initiatives where he supported the university in a variety of pursuits. In his final role before joining Lockheed Martin, he was the Chief Technologist for Hypersonics with the Indiana Innovation Institute, a non-profit organization focused on driving defense-related research and development in the State of Indiana utilizing its deep bench of industry, small business, and academic institutions to provide solutions to strategic challenges facing the Nation. 
 
Dr. Miller holds a bachelor’s degree in Nuclear Engineering from Purdue University and both a Master of Science and Doctorate in Nuclear Engineering from the Air Force Institute of Technology. In addition, he has a Masters of Military Operational Art and Science from the Air University Air Command and Staff College and is a graduate of the Defense Acquisition University’s Program Manager and Executive Program Manager Courses.

 LTCOL White is a senior satellite engineer serving with the Australian Military for over 20 years and Commercial Satellite Industry. He has deployed on several operations and recently returned with the last Australian contingent in Afghanistan. LTCOL White recently joined the newly formed Defence Space Command being selected to lead the Australian Defence Force SATCOM capabilities. 

LTCOL White is a soldier at heart and understands the war fighter. His passion is to reshape the Australia Defence Force with the most modern telecommunications systems to increases the already effective Australian war fighter. He has successfully delivered several major telecommunications projects including Joint Project 2072 2B, ahead of schedule and budget delivering a fully integrated software defined network for the tactical environment. He has also delivered Australia’s first satellite on move capability integrated with the Bushmaster PMV.

Lieutenant Colonel Erik J. Haeuptle

Lieutenant Colonel Erik J. Haeuptle is the Joint Staff, J7, Joint Interoperability & Data Link Training Center, Branch Chief of Interoperability & Proponency. The Interoperability & Proponency Branch of the JID-TC exists to advance Multi-TADL Network & Joint Data Network interoperability through engagement with Joint Staff, Combatant Commanders, Allied & Coalition partners, Service components, and DoD Agencies. I&P provides subject matter expertise to CCMDs for Multi-Tactical & Joint Data Network operations in order to enhance the lethality of the Joint Warfighter and ensure all domain readiness for the next war.

Lt Colonel Haeuptle earned his commission in 2003 from Reserve Officer Training Corps Detachment 620 and received his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bowling Green State University. Following graduation, he spent a year awaiting training at Eglin AFB in the 728th Air Control Squadron and as a 33d Operations Group executive officer. Lt Col Haeuptle then attended Undergraduate Air Battle Manager Training at Tyndall AFB, FL and then became an E-3B/C Air Weapons Officer, Air Surveillance Officer, and Assistant Flight Commander for the 963d Airborne Air Control Squadron at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma. After his Tinker assignment, he became an Air Liaison Officer/Fighter Duty Officer and Weapons & Tactics Flight CC & Director of Logistics for the 682d Air Support Operations Squadron, Pope Army Airfield, Ft Bragg, NC. Following that assignment, he served as the lead Air Battle Manager and Mission Crew Commander Instructor as well as an Assistant Director of Operations in the 330th Combat Training Squadron, Robins AFB, GA. After leaving his assignment at Robins, he became the Director of Operations, 14th Air Support Operations Squadron, Pope Army Airfield, Ft Bragg, North Carolina. Finally, Lt Col Haeuptle became the Commander of the 682d Air Support Operations Squadron, deactivated the unit, and then stood up the 818th Operations Support Squadron, the TACPs first-ever OSS.

Lieutenant Colonel Haeuptle is a senior Air Battle Manager with over 2075 hours, 105 Combat Sorties, and over 1200 combat hours logged in the E-3 AWACS and E-8 JSTARS. As a Senior Air Battle Manger with over 5 deployments, he supported Operations NOBLE EAGLE, IRAQI FREEDOM, ENDURING FREEDOM, and INHERENT RESOLVE. Finally, as a Tactical Air Control Party Officer, he supported Operation Enduring Freedom as a Senior Air Director in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Lieutenant Colonel Ryan A. Rose serves as the Deputy Chief for Tactical Satellite Communications Acquisition Delta at Space Systems Command, Los Angeles Air Force Base, California.  As Deputy Chief, she is responsible for fielding the next generation of tactical military satellite communication systems supporting the Space Force and the Department of Defense.  She leads a team of over 200 military, civilian and contractor personnel developing a $9 billion space portfolio with systems including the Protected Anti-jam Tactical SATCOM program, Wideband Global SATCOM, and Enterprise Management & Control.

Lieutenant Colonel Rose’s previous assignments include Materiel Leader and Chief of the Rocket Systems Launch Program and the Small Launch and Targets Division, Congressional Liaison Officer where she was the liaison between the Air Force and Congress on Air Force programs, Program Element Monitor for the Air Force’s Space Situational Awareness programs, Program Manager in the Space Superiority Systems Directorate, Mission Planning Crew Commander for the National Reconnaissance Office, and Launch Readiness Manager for the 2d Space Launch Squadron.
 

Mr Alula Berhane

Mr Alula B. Berhane is a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the United States Air Force with over 25 years of service and the owner and CEO of ABB International Consulting, LLC. During his service he has gained in depth experiences in the areas of Military Satellite Communication (MILSATCOM), Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) and USAF Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programs in over 20 countries across the Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In addition, Mr Berhane has served as a Political-Military affair officer in Africa and possesses an unparalleled understanding of the military, social and economic realities on the continent, especially in eastern Africa.

Mr Charles Glass

Mr Charles Glass

Mr. Glass is a veteran with service in the U.S. Navy submarine force. In January 2015 Mr. Glass was selected as the Chief, International Spectrum Policy Division (ISPD) for the United States Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), Office of Spectrum Management (OSM). He has worked for NTIA since 2001 within ISPD where he has had a diverse career, representing U.S. and federal government interests abroad in a variety of fields including mobile, fixed, and radiodetermination services. Mr. Glass currently leads a team of seven policy and technical experts engaged in developing policy and regulations for international radiocommunications systems including federal satellite systems.

Mr Geoffroy Beaudot

Mr Geoffroy Beaudot

Mr Geoffroy Beaudot joined the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs - Directorate of Defence of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg in May 2016 in order to develop Space programs, including mainly Satellite Communications and Earth
Observation systems. He currently the Head of ‘SPACE and CYBER’ Office at the Directorate of Defence and represents Luxembourg in different European initiatives (at EDA, ESA or EU Commission level) and is the national representative for the NATO SatCom capability team meetings. He is also engaged in many bilateral developments
with NATO Allies.

As Head of Office, he advises the Minister of Defence and his Chief of Staff on numerous occasions when meeting international leaders and stakeholders from different sectors.

He started his career in 1996 as Offcier in the Belgian Ministry of Defence and in 2002, his first position was Head of a Network Supervision team. In 2007, he started managing the service in charge of the satellite communication hub for the Belgian MoD. After three years in this function, he became SatCom Program Manager for the Belgian Defence. In 2012, after a one-year staff course, he joined the 4th Group Communications and Information Systems as Officer ‘Operations & Training’. In 2015, he became Major (OF-3) and went back to the procurement service of the Belgian Defence as Head of the Cell C³ Platforms Integration.

Mr Beaudot attended the Royal Military Academy in Brussels, Belgium and graduated with a Master of Engineering, Telecommunications. He is born in 1978, is married with three children. He grew up in Belgium, used to practice sports and is an active member of the scout movement.

Mr Gus Anderson

Senior Director of Business Development, DRS Global Enterprise Solutions (GES), Inc.
Mr Gus Anderson

 Gus Anderson manages the GES business development organization consisting of three Senior BD Managers and three Capture Analysts supporting DRS’ Global Enterprise Solutions (GES). Gus has over 35 years’ experience in the areas of telecommunications, satellite and Information Technology (IT) services.   Retiring in 2008 as a U.S. Army communications colonel, Gus has been with DRS ever since, focusing on providing communications support to the warfighter as a program manager for satellite and network systems in the Balkans, the SPAWAR/DISA MWR internet café program, the USMC Wi-Fi program in Afghanistan, and  the global VSAT network for the US Agency for International Development (USAID). 

 
Combining his military background with his recent industry program management experience, Gus is working full-time on developing new business opportunities for GES across a wide spectrum of the U.S Federal Government, including the DoD, other Federal Agencies, and the intelligence community. 
 

Mr Jared Rieckewald

Mr Jared Rieckewald

 Jared Rieckewald is the senior director for government business with SpaceLogistics, a Northrop Grumman company. In this role, Rieckewald is responsible for delivering on-orbit servicing capabilities to U.S. and coalition government-client spacecraft.

Rieckewald possesses more than 20 years of expertise developing and delivering emerging technologies, serving in various roles including portfolio manager, business development and capture executive, acquisition professional and intelligence officer.

Prior to joining Northrop Grumman Rieckewald, a former Marine Corps officer, served as a senior professional staff member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, and an oversight officer for the Office of the Inspector General at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Rieckewald served in a variety of business strategy positions across Northrop Grumman’s Aerospace, Technology Services, and Space sectors since joining the company in 2013, including executive lead for risk and opportunity management for the Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent Program, and program director for advanced autonomy in Aerospace Systems. Rieckewald joined SpaceLogistics in 2019 as its senior director for government business.

Rieckewald holds a bachelor’s degree in foreign service, and master’s degrees in finance and public policy management from Georgetown University.

Mr Mark Gruenewald

Director, SATCOM Integrated Operations Division, US Space Command
Mr Mark Gruenewald

 Colonel Mark Gruenewald, USAF (ret.) is a US Government Civilian and serving as the Director, SATCOM Integrated Operations Division (SIOD) assigned to Peterson AFB CO.  The SIOD is a geographically separated division of the Combined Space Operations Center, Vandenberg AFB CA.  He has 25 years military and 4 years industry experience with Superior Performance and Command leadership supporting General and Flag Officers in Joint and Combined Space Warfighter environments.  His duties and responsibilities included working with the Space and Missile Systems Center (SMC), Army Space and Missile Defense Command Army Strategic (SMDC/ARSTRAT), US Fleet Cyber Command (USFLEETCYBERCOM), Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) and HQ Air Force Space Command (HQ AFSPC). He has excelled in multiple leadership positions spanning Strategic, Operational and Tactical levels as Advisor to HQ AFSPC, Director, Integrated Air, Space, Cyber & ISR Ops; Deputy Commander of 9th Space Operations Squadron (125-mbr unit) performing operations in the Joint Space Operations Center (JSpOC) and as the Deputy Director of the 614th Air & Space Operations Center; Commander, Det 1, 8th Space Warning Squadron; and Dean, Education and Training of the Reserve National Security Space Institute.  During these key leadership roles, he led joint & combined crews during multiple Tier-1 exercises spanning Operations Global Lightning, Global Thunder, Schriever Wargames and Red Flag.  He has created a squadron from an Employment Concept to a fully manned squadron, complete with facilities and operational budget.  He has created designs for multiple satellite operations facilities for which some were built and are still in use today.

 

His SATCOM and satellite command and control experience includes Satellite Telemetry, Tracking & Commanding, Orbital Analysis, Spacecraft Engineering, and Senior Vehicle Operations Director for the launch of a satellite.  He was an Air Education & Training Command Master Instructor where he taught Spacecraft Fundamentals, SATCOM, Telemetry Tracking and Commanding, Anomaly Resolution and Spacecraft Maneuvers.

Prior to retirement, Mr. Gruenewald led the effort on behalf of the Commander, US Strategic Command (CDRUSSTRATCOM), the Commander, AFSPC, and the Joint Space Doctrine & Tactics Forum (JSDTF) as the first Senior Co-Chair of the Fighting SATCOM Working Group which conducted the Mission Analysis to integrate SATCOM across Army, Navy, Air Force and DISA.  He executed several visits spanning CONUS and OCONUS locations to ensure he captured requirements and needs from SATCOM units across the joint community.  His team delivered the initial Concept of Operations which led to the stand-up of the current SATCOM Integrated Operations Division.  He identified opportunities for SATCOM automation and integration across the services that have since been adopted in other disciplines in the Space Enterprise.

Post retirement, Mr. Gruenewald has served in various roles including DevSecOps software evolution, supported the Standard Space Trainer, developed the Space Warfighter Operations Center concept for the integrated facility hosting all former 50 SW operational units, led the install of Network as a Service replacing the AFNet and finally the kick-off of the OPIR Enterprise Health and Status Common Operating Picture development. 

Additionally, Mr. Gruenewald is an exceptional leader guiding two separate Squadrons in winning Unit of the Year, multiple Crew of the Year, and personally, multiple Officer of the Year accolades.  He creates a culture of excellence and an environment where all can excel.  He has a Master’s Degree in Space Operations and Management and a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Studies. He has a current TS/SCI and CI Poly.

Mr. Michael “Mike” T. Laney is a Department of the Air Force Civilian working as the Lead on International Engagement for Military Satellite Communications (MILSATCOM) under the Space Division for the Office of the Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force (International Affairs), at the Pentagon, Washington, D.C. Mr. Laney oversees the development of cooperative agreements in MILSATCOM including wideband, narrowband, and protected satellite communications.

Mr. Laney enlisted in the United States Army June 1989, later graduating from the United States Military Academy June 1995. He continued serving on active duty in the United States Army as a commissioned officer until June 2004. His active duty experiences included multiple overseas assignments and deployments in Europe with frequent contact with host nation government representatives as a Military Police Officer. Upon separation from the Army, he continued to serve overseas as a Department of the Army Civilian -- first as a Host Nation Liaison Officer, then later as a Government Relations Advisor in Belgium. Upon returning from his last overseas assignment in 2011, Mr. Laney transferred to the Department of the Air Force as an International Relations Specialist.

Mr Mike Dean

Mike Dean currently serves as the Satellite Communications (SATCOM) Division Chief for C3 Infrastructure Directorate of the Deputy Chief Information Officer for Command, Control, and Communications (C3), Office of the Secretary of Defense, Chief Information Officer. As DoD SATCOM Chief, he provides technical expertise, oversight and broad guidance on policy, programmatic and technical issues relating to DoD SATCOM to integrate and synchronize defense-wide communications programs and achieve the DoD’s Digital Modernization Strategy initiatives. He also advises on efforts to achieve and maintain information dominance through DoD SATCOM for the Department of Defense. He manages efforts defining DoD policies and strategies for design, architecture, interoperability standards, capability development and sustainment of DoD SATCOM and serves as the DoD CIO’s focal point for international partnership activities in SATCOM to include the NATO SATCOM Services 6th Generation (NSS6G) activities. Mike’s DoD SATCOM division also maintains synchronization architecture roadmaps and employs various governance forums to synchronize end to end SATCOM activities, including the SATCOM Synchronization and Integration Workshop and the SATCOM Systems Engineering Group. Before joining federal government service, Mike served as a career Army Signal Corps and Cyberspace officer for more than 27 years (including multiple command positions and multiple combat deployments within the 82d Airborne Division as well as serving as the Space Branch Chief in the Joint Staff J6). Following his military career, Mike served as a defense contractor for in multiple roles supporting the DoD CIO in satellite communications and information enterprise management. Mike’s most notable role in DoD SATCOM is the development of the Enterprise SATCOM Management and Control Reference Architecture published in 2019 by the DoD to describe the building code for DoD enterprise SATCOM modernization. Mike Dean holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Information Systems Management from Western International University and a Master of Arts in History from Western Illinois University.

 Mr. Darren Buck serves as Liaison to Air Force and Space Force, for Department of Defense (DoD) Executive Agent for DoD Mission Partner Environment (MPE), Mission Partner Capabilities Office (MPCO). As a member of the Executive Agent Division, he operates on behalf of the 

Secretary of the Air Force for Governance, Strategy, Integration, Resources, Requirements, and Strategic Engagement in support of DoD MPE. In his Liaison role, Mr. Buck engages, facilitates, and advises Air Force and 
Space Force leaders, offices, and programs to build and strengthen connectivity, information sharing, and interoperability with US Allies and DoD Mission Partners.
 
Darren Buck has served over thirty years in the Reserve of the Air Force, and he remains in service as a Colonel, assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration. Colonel Buck 
received his commission in 1990 through the Air Force ROTC program of the University of Notre Dame. He has served in a number of space operations and leadership assignments at 50th Space Wing, 45th Space Wing, 595th Space Group, 460th Space Wing, and 310th Space Wing. Further, he has accumulated over 19 months’ command experience in Joint and Interagency space operations and is a fully-qualified Joint Officer (JQO Level III). 
 
Immediately preceding his entrance into Federal Service as a Department of the Air Force Civilian in April 2021, Colonel Buck served as the Deputy Director for Air, Space, and Information Operations, Headquarters Air Force Reserve 
Command, Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. He led oversight and advocacy for all Air Force Reserve operational units, assets, and capabilities, encompassing Combat Air Forces, Mobility Air Forces, Space Operations, Information Operations, and Nuclear Enterprise Operations.
 
As an aerospace and defense industry professional, Darren Buck has served in multiple leadership, technical, and consulting roles since 2000. These have included positions at Air Force Space Command, Missile Defense Agency, 
Headquarters Air Force Executive Action Group, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Federal Aviation Administration's Commercial Space Transportation Advisory Committee

Ms Charlotte Gerhart

 Ms. Charlotte Gerhart is the Chief, Tactical SATCOM Acquisition Delta, Military Communications and Position, Navigation, and Timing (MilComm & PNT) Directorate, Space Systems Command, Los Angeles Air Force Base (LAAFB), CA. She is responsible for the acquisition, production, and fielding of tactical satellite communications capabilities for the Nation’s warfighters.

 
Ms. Gerhart received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1993 from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Science in Systems Engineering in 2011 from the Naval Post Graduate School.
 
Ms. Gerhart began her career in 1992 working for the Aerospace Corporation supporting the US Air Force Phillips Laboratory in Albuquerque, New Mexico. During this time she worked on the development of various technologies for space systems in the areas of power, thermal control, and space debris modeling.
 
In 1994, she began working for Nichols Research Corporation supporting the US Air Force Research Laboratory, what was previously Phillips Laboratory. During this time she focused on the development and demonstration of satellite thermal management systems such as looped heat pipes and phase change materials.
 
In 1998, Ms. Gerhart joined the civil service supporting the US Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate. In this assignment she was responsible for managing the development and demonstration of space system technologies including thermal systems, structural systems, vibro-acoustic suppression, and laser communications systems.
 
In 2007, Ms. Gerhart moved to Los Angeles to support the SMC/MILSATCOM Transformational Satellite Program. She initially supported the satellite laser communications payload, transitioned to being responsible for the payload, and eventually was the satellite chief engineer.
 
In 2009, Ms. Gerhart moved to be the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) program as the manager of the WGS 7-10 program (also known as WGS Block II Follow-on), and later served as the Deputy Program Manager for the WGS program.  From 2013 through 2018 she served as the WGS Program Manager delivering four satellites into operations, with two more in work.
 
In 2018, Ms. Gerhart moved to the Remote Sensing Directorate to be the Chief of the Space Based Environmental Monitoring Division.  In 2019, as part of the SMC 2.0 transition she was selected to be the Chief, LEO Division for the Space Production Corps in 2019.  
 
In 2022, Ms. Gerhart transitioned to the newly formed MilComm & PNT Directorate and assumed leadership of the Tactical SATCOM Acquisition Delta.  She has responsibility for the production and fielding of WGS 11+, the rapid acquisition and fielding of Protected Tactical SATCOM (PTS) Rapid Prototype payloads, Protected Tactical Enterprise Service (PTES) Rapid Prototype, Army & Air Force Anti-jam Modem (A3M), Air Force Wideband Enterprise Terminal (AFWET), and Enterprise Management and Control (EM&C).

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

    Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.
