Lieutenant Colonel Peter George

 Lieutenant Colonel Pete George has spent his career dedicated to combat
vehicles both operationally and as an Army Acquisition Officer. After
Commissioning as an Armor officer in the United States Army, LTC George
was stationed with the 1st Cavalry Division in Fort Hood, Texas. With the 1st
CAV he deployed twice to Iraq; With the 1st CAV he deployed twice to Iraq
as part of Operations Iraqi Freedom II and Operation Iraqi Freedom O6-08
surge. During these deployments he served as a M1A2 SEP Platoon
Leader, and Scout Platoon Leader and Executive Officer on M3A3s and
operated in Baghdad, Baqubah, and Muqdadiya.
After leaving Ft. Hood and completing a Joint assignment in the US
Southern Command area of operations, LTC George took command of the
M1A1 AIM based, Alpha Company, 3rd Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment in
Grafenwoehr, Germany, part of the 172d Separate Infantry Brigade. Alpha
Company, under LTC George, would go on to transition into a light infantry
formation and deploy to Paktika, Afghanistan, as part of Operations
Enduring Freedom 11-12. While there, LTC George took command of the Brigade’s Headquarters and
Headquarters Company. When leading operational units, LTC George lived by the philosophy that if you
always take care of your people and equipment, they will always take care of you.
As an Acquisition Officer, LTC George has worked across the Army portfolio of tracked combat vehicles. As
the Assistant Product Manager for the M109 Paladin/Paladin Integrated Management he was responsible for
mobility, survivability and vehicle electronics through the program's successful completion of Milestone C. He
additionally oversaw the Bradley A4 program as the Assistant Product Manager for Bradley Modernization,
responsible for the vehicle through the program's successful production decision. From there, LTC George
competed a series of assignments in the Pentagon with the Headquarters, Department of the Army. These
assignments included working as the Department of the Army System Coordinator for the Bradley Fighting
Vehicle as well as the Assistant Executive Officer to the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics
and Technology). Throughout his time, both operationally and developing world-class equipment for Soldiers,
LTC George has maintained his focus and belief in the power of great teams.
LTC George currently serves as the Product Manager, Booker Combat Vehicle, Future Battle Platforms (FBP),
Program Executive Officer Ground – Ground Combat Systems.
LTC George holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of
Missouri. He has a Master's of Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of
Pennsylvania and is a graduate of the Command and Generals Staff Officer Course in Ft. Leavenworth,
Kansas. He is married to the former Miss Elizabeth Unger. In his free time, he enjoys distance running, scuba
diving, playing very amateur hockey and traveling with Liz and their daughters, Reagan and Riley

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.
