SAE Media Group is proud to present the 6th annual Maritime Reconnaissance and Surveillance Technology VIRTUAL CONFERENCE.

With rapid technological advances changing the way maritime forces need to utilise and manage ISR capabilities across domains, Maritime and Littoral Reconnaissance and Surveillance systems and platforms have become a critical component of naval capability.

As the only Maritime ISR event with a specific focus on Space-Based Domain Awareness, Maritime Reconnaissance and Surveillance Technology 2021 follows five very successful predecessors. With the previous events taking place in Rome, the event has brought forward a discussion on the growing need for more comprehensive and sophisticated Joint Maritime ISR capabilities in the Mediterranean and beyond, particularly following the Migrant Crisis that still remains.

This year, with the geographical shift comes a subtle strategic one, providing a renewed focus on some of the strategic threats and technological challenges facing naval and joint forces from across the world. The conference retains an increased focus on space based maritime reconnaissance and the relation between the Littoral and Maritime Domains and ISR capabilities that occur here. The aim is to assist the advancement and engagement of Naval practitioners and Programme Managers through briefings, panel sessions and focused discussion groups on topics including Unmanned ISR platforms, Space-based Maritime Reconnaissance, Fleet Air Arm ISR capabilities, Sensors at Sea and more.

Brigadier General Mike Adamson

Brigadier-General G. Michael (Mike) Adamson joined the Canadian Air Force in 1993 after completing his Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Affairs at Carleton University in Ottawa, ON. Upon receiving his Navigator’s Wings in 1995, he was posted to 405 (Maritime Patrol) Squadron in Greenwood, NS where he was employed as a CP-140(A) Nav/Com, Crew Commander, and Sqn Standards and Training Officer. In 2001 he was posted to 404 (Maritime Patrol and Training) Squadron where he served as an Instructor, Simulator Operator, Crew Commander, Standards Officer and Chief Aircrew Instructor.

Promoted to Major in 2004, BGen Adamson was transferred to National Defence Headquarters in Ottawa as the Career Manager for LRP Navigators. In 2007 he was selected to attend the Joint Command and Staff Course in Toronto, ON, returning to Ottawa upon completion to conduct an Occupation Review for the Air Navigator trade. In January 2009, he returned to 405 Long Range Patrol Squadron and was appointed Deputy Commanding Officer.

BGen Adamson returned to NDHQ in July of 2010, and worked as a Strategic Coordination Staff Officer for Chief of Force Development. During that period, he completed his Masters in Defence Studies from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) Kingston, and was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in January 2011. In September 2011, he deployed to CMF Bahrain as Chief of the Air Coordination Element supporting Maritime Security and Counter-Piracy operations in the Arabian Gulf and Indian Ocean.

In 2012 BGen Adamson was appointed Commanding Officer of 405 (Long Range Patrol) Squadron, overseeing the introduction of Squadron first-line maintenance and unit conversion to the upgraded Block III CP140M Aurora.

BGen Adamson returned to NDHQ in 2014 as Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. Promoted to Colonel in 2015, BGen Adamson assumed duties with Chief of Force Development as Director C4ISR.

In 2017, BGen Adamson was extremely honoured and proud to culminate 15 years in the Annapolis Valley as Wing Commander of 14 Wing Greenwood.

In 2019, BGen Adamson was selected to attend the National Securities Program at Canadian Forces College in Toronto, and was promoted to his current rank in May 2020.

BGen Adamson assumed the role of RCAF Director General Space and the Joint Force Space Component Commander in June 2020.

He and his wife Laura are the proud parents of two wonderful young ladies, Corynne and Elise. BGen Adamson loves boating with his family, Senators’ hockey, and playing the piano.

Mr. Bryan Smith is the Director of Maritime Product Management at Maxar Technologies. In this role, Mr. Smith launched the new Crow’s Nest Maritime Monitoring and Security suite of products, providing comprehensive maritime monitoring and insights via a multi-sensor satellite approach. Before that, Mr. Smith worked as a Strategy Director at Maxar Technologies and was responsible for projects that ranged from determining new growth opportunities to developing an AI/ML focused product strategy. Mr. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado and an MBA from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University

Captain Eric Soderberg

Captain Eric Soderberg

CAPT Eric Soderberg is a Massachusetts native and a 1990 graduate of Lehigh university. In 1992, he earned his commission as a distinguished naval graduate of the aviation officer candidate school.
CAPT Soderberg's first assignment was to helicopter anti-submarine squadron Eleven (HS-11) completing Mediterranean and Arabian gulf deployments aboard USS America and USS George Washington.
In 1998, CAPT Soderberg entered USN Test pilot school, graduating in 1999. He subsequently served as a safety officer, test pilot and SH-60F/H platform coordinator at the rotary wing aircraft test squadron. While there, he worked extensively on the MH60S test and deployment program, beginning with the initial flight of the first airframe through acceptance into operational evaluation.
Upon completing his test pilot tour, CAPT Soderberg became an instructor at the fleet replacement training squadron HC-3. In 2003, CAPT Soderberg became a department head with HS-8 where he served as the safety, operations and maintenance officer. During the 2005 around the world deployment on USS Carl Vinson, he was forward deployed to Camp Arifjan Kuwait, where in support of OIF he compiled nearly 100 hours of combat flight time operating in Iraq, completing several classified missions under enemy fire. During this same deployment, he earned his CDO underway qualification.
He also completed an IA tour to the joint personnel recovery centre (JRPC) in the CENTCOM CA OC Located in Qatar.
While stationed in NS Newport, in addition to graduating from the Naval war college in 2008, CAPT Soderberg was an associate fellow with the CNO's strategic studies group XXVI.
Capt. Soderberg served as the Commanding officer of HSC-8, the first CVW MH-60S squadron to deploy under the Navy's Helo Master Plan. During his Naval careers, he amassed over 4000 flight hours in 22 different fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
Capt. Soderberg has been assigned to NAVAIR since 2011, first as the MH-60S class desk followed by the MH-60S IPT lead and then as the military director of NAVAIR's cyber warfare detachment. CAPT Soderberg is currently assigned as the Program manager for PMA-266.

Captain Fredrik Palmquist

Captain Fredrik Palmquist

Fredrik Palmquist is a Surface Warfare officer and has worked in several positions in the Missile boat- and the Corvette squadrons in Stockholm. He graduated from the Swedish Naval Academy in 1988 and took positions as PWO AAW and ASW and was the Commanding Officer of HMS Starkodder 1998-2000 and the Commanding Officer of the 41th Corvette squadron 2008-2010. He has also been deployed in UNIFIL MAROPS in Lebanon in 2006-2007 as Head of N5 in the German CTF staff during one year.
He graduated from Command Collage in Stockholm in 2002 and held thereafter different positions in the Defense Staff. He was DCOS in the Defense Staff from 2012 and he was promoted to Captain (N) 2014 and took the same year the position as DCOM Naval Department at the Training and Procurement Staff until 2017 when he became COM 4th Naval Warfare Flotilla. From 2019 is Fredrik Palmquist Director of the Swedish Naval Staff.
Fredrik Palmquist is a fellow and a member of the board of the Royal Swedish Society of Naval Sciences and is published several times with pieces about sub surface and surface warfare. He is the former President of the Rotary Club of Djursholm, former Chairman of the trust Drotting Victorias Örlogshem and has been the chairman of the Naval Club of Stockholm. He is also the vice Chairman of the town council in his hometown Danderyd.
Golf and sailing are his main interests besides taking care of old fashion wooden boats.

Captain Luigi Ciani

Captain Luigi Ciani

Navy Captain Luigi CIANI was born in Bari on August 22nd, 1966. He attended the Naval Academy in Livorno, between 1984 and 1988. In 1988 he was awarded the qualification of Electronic Warfare Officer and in 1991 the qualification in "TLC/IOC", when attending the Masters Course at the Italian Naval Academy.
From that time, he embarked on several warships, including the aircraft Carrier Cavour and Garibaldi, being responsible for the Communication and Training Branch of the Italian NATO Response Force Maritime Component Commander staff. From 1992 to 2010 he has participated to various training activities and peace keeping missions.
He was also responsible for the Operational Brach of Amphibious Ships and part of the Spanish and Italian Amphibious Task Force HQs.
In 1996 he was the Commanding Officer of the transport vessel Capri, participating in the Operation Alba NEO.
In 2014 he joined the General Staff of the Italian Navy working in the C4S Department as Chief of the C2, Integration and Maritime Surveillance Systems Office. From 2018 he get also the responsibility of Italian Navy Space and Earth Observation Systems coordinator.
He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2017.
 

Captain Timothy Thompson

Captain Timothy Thompson

Captain Tim Thompson graduated from Oregon State University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science Engineering. He is also a graduate of the University of Arkansas, with a Master of Science in Operations Management and a graduate of Naval Postgraduate School with a Master of Business Administration and holds a Project Management Professional certification.
His operational assignments include service with the “Grey Knights” of VP-46, where he was twice awarded Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TEN’s Crew of the Year; catapult and arresting gear officer onboard USS J. C. Stennis (CVN 74); department head with the “Golden Eagles” of VP-9; and Executive and 65th Commanding Officer of the “Fighting Marlins” of VP-40. He has accumulated over 3000 flight hours including over 400 combat flight hours in support of operations ENDURING FREEDOM, IRAQI FREEDOM and INHERENT RESOLVE.
His shore assignments include Tactics and New Technologies Department Head with Commander, Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing TEN (CPRW-10); VP sea and shore detailer at the Bureau of Naval Personnel (PERS-432); program lead for Headquarters exercises, U.S. Africa Command, J-7, Joint Training and Readiness Directorate; Military Assistant (MA) to the Deputy Undersecretary of the Navy (Management) and Executive Assistant to the Director, Office of Chief Management Officer (OCMO), responsible for supporting the Under Secretary of the Navy in the performance of his duties as the Department of the Navy’s Chief Management Officer.
Before reporting as Commodore, Task Force SIX SEVEN, he completed a corporate fellowship with Deloitte, L.L.P., as part of the academic year 2019-2020 Secretary of Defense Executive Fellowship program.
His decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal (2 Awards), Navy Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device (2 awards), Navy Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy Achievement Medal (5 awards), and various personal, campaign, and unit awards. He is married to the former Amy Davis of Wenatchee, Washington. They reside with their son Gabriel and their two Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Lucy and Piper.

Commodore Mike Knott

An Above Water Warfare Officer and Project and Programme Professional, Mike is responsible for developing the capabilities required of the Royal Navy in the future to enable the effective and efficient control and denial of the Maritime Battlespace.

A lengthy operational career at sea as both a Navigator and Principal Warfare Officer, culminated in Command of the Type 23 Frigate HMS Portland. Thereafter, he moved ashore into the MOD and has spent the last 10 years in the world of strategic finance and capability management where he has been instrumental in shaping the long-term future of the Royal Navy.
 

Commodore Thomas Guy

Deputy Director, Combined Joint Operations from the Sea Centre of Excellence
Commodore Thomas Guy

Tom Guy's early appointments included a wide variety of ships, from patrol craft to mine-hunters, frigates, destroyers and aircraft carriers, ranging from fishery protection to counter-piracy and UN embargo operations as well as training and operating with a broad range of NATO allies. An anti-submarine warfare officer by background, he commanded the minehunter HMS Shoreham and the frigate HMS Northumberland. Ashore he worked in the strategy area of the MOD and directed the Naval Division of the Joint Staff College. He served as Chief of Staff to the UK's Commander Amphibious Task Group, as the Captain (Surface Ships) of the Devonport Flotilla, and in force generation in Navy Command Headquarters.

Operational Staff appointments have included tours ashore and afloat in the Balkans and the Gulf, including service in the Headquarters of the Multi-National Force Iraq (Baghdad) in 2005. In 2016-17 he was the Deputy UK Maritime Component Commander in Bahrain, working alongside the US Fifth Fleet Headquarters. He assumed the role of Deputy Director of the Combined Joint Operations from the Sea Centre of Excellence in Norfolk, VA, in September 2017.
 

Dr Gurpartap Sandhoo

Distinguished Visiting Professor, Robert Heinlein Endowed Astronautics Chair, Aerospace Engineering Department , US Naval Academy
Dr Gurpartap Sandhoo

Dr. Sandhoo currently occupies the Distinguished Visiting Professor Robert Heinlein Endowed Chair in Astronautics at the US Naval Academy. Prior to that he headed the Spacecraft Engineering Division, and was the acting Director of the Naval Center of Space Technology (NCST) at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), a full spectrum lab that conceives, designs, builds, tests, operates, and transitions advanced space systems and technologies. He provided executive direction and technical leadership in conducting research of space systems with advanced technologies. He was also a flight controller at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, and was research & development engineer at Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory, and in industry.

Dr Rhett Jefferies

Dr Rhett Jefferies

Dr. Rhett W. Jefferies became Technical Director of the Office of Naval Research Global (ONRG) in February 2020. He previously served as Science Director in Santiago Chile for Interdisciplinary Science beginning in July 2018. He leads command technical experts to facilitate international research collaborations in emerging science and technology, seek innovations and revolutionary technology advances and accelerate technology transition to the fleet.

Dr. Jefferies has 30 years of leadership and management experience, 25 years involved in research and development. Prior to joining ONRG, Dr. Jefferies conducted fundamental and applied research spanning a wide range of technology areas including renewable energy production, propulsion, multi-phase flows, flow control and marine vehicles as an Associate Research Professor at The Pennsylvania State University Applied Research Laboratory. He was a member of the Penn State Mechanical Engineering Graduate Faculty and served as Principal Investigator (PI), co-PI and test engineer for projects funded by government and industry, often employing advanced instrumentation and optical diagnostic techniques.

From November 2009 – July 2013 he implemented and managed the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) Program to accelerate technology development in partnership with industry, to reduce fuel burn, emissions and noise of commercial aircraft. Previous to the FAA, Dr. Jefferies served over 20 years in a variety of technical and staff positions in the US Air Force. These included three assignments as program manager in the Air Force Research Laboratory developing technology to improve aircraft, engine and missile performance, and managing basic fluid mechanics research in the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR). He was also Assistant Professor and Deputy Director of the Aeronautics Laboratory in the Aeronautics Department of the US Air Force Academy.

Dr. Jefferies is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a Member of the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society.

Conrado Ávila joined the Spanish Army as an officer of the Engineers Weapon. With twenty six years’ experience, in both of the Spanish Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Interior, he have achieved significant challenges as the provision of C4ISR capabilities to the Spanish National Coordination Centre of the European Border Surveillance System, and in several projects to obtaining earth observation satellite capabilities for surveillance and intelligence in the fight against organized crime, in collaboration with European agencies as EU SATCEN, FRONTEX, EMSA and ESA.

Lt Cdr Laurent Thepaut joined the French Navy in 1995 and served the surface fleet ever since. Surface Warfare Officer with a specialization in radar technology, he has been exposed to the main aero maritime operations of the 2000s (Balkans, Middle East, Afghanistan, Libya), in the environment of the NATO and Combined Maritime Forces.
Before joining the Allied Maritime Command in 2019, he was the Commanding Officer of the hydrographic and survey vessel Borda (A792).
His personal awards include the National Order of Merit and Combatant Cross medals.

Guy is the former US’ Science & Technology Advisor for Maritime Domain Awareness (2003-2012) and creator of both space-based AIS & C-SIGMA, the basis for Task #1 of the US’ National Space Policy (see below).
He has been involved in reconnaissance operations and systems development in the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, DHS, and Johns Hopkins/APL for many years. He also served as US DHS S&T SME for unclassified Space. The academic advisor (technology) to the Multinational Maritime Security Center of Excellence, he is a contributing editor for SpaceWatch Global.
A Distinguished graduate of the Naval War College, he was awarded the DHS Distinguished Career Service Award in 2012 and the US Geospatial Intelligence Foundation’s Individual Achievement Award in 2015. He has been nominated for the US’ National Medal for Technology & Innovation and the Space Technology Hall of Fame.

Louis Wilson-Chalon is Military Marketing Manager Lead with Leonardo Helicopters UK. He joined the company in 2016 following a 30 year operationally dominated career in the Royal Navy as a ship’s navigator, helicopter pilot, warfare officer and staff officer. This included Carrier and Small Ship’s Flight flying operations in the Mediterranean, South Atlantic, Gulf, Caribbean and North Atlantic. In his staff roles he has experience of training ships to operate their aircraft, in HR and worked for the Director Army Aviation fielding the Apache helicopter for land operations. He has commanded aviation units at both squadron and force level; his last post was the Wildcat and Lynx Force Commander at RNAS Yeovilton where he oversaw the introduction of AW159 to RN service. He is a graduate of Joint Advanced Warfighting School in Norfolk Virginia, USA and remains a serving Air Branch Royal Navy Reservist.

Michael Hurowitz serves as chief executive officer and chief technology officer for Orbital Micro Systems. In these roles, he sets the strategic direction for the organization and oversees the company’s numerous research and development programs, as well as its world-class team of engineers and scientists. Hurowitz brings nearly 20 years of technology and product development experience to the Orbital Micro Systems' leadership team. Prior to co-founding Orbital Micro Systems, he worked with numerous companies, including startups, Fortune 500 companies, university research groups and federal agencies. He serves as a volunteer mentor for the University of Colorado Venture Partners team.


Hurowitz holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering Physics and Public Affairs from the Colorado School of Mines, and is an instructor at the University of Colorado. He is an avid outdoorsman who enjoys the Colorado mountains and works part-time on a bison ranch.

Mr. Free, Maxar’s Sr. Director for National Security, leads a global Joint Engagement Team focused on assisting National Security clients meet some of their most demanding Earth Intelligence requirements. In recent assignments in Europe, Middle East and Africa, he led engagement strategies with agencies across government including Ministries of Interior and Defence, NATO, the European Defence Agency and security agencies such as Customs, Borders, and Police. 
 

Mr. Free is a former U.S. Navy Commander with 24 years of active service in Naval Aviation as a Naval Flight Officer holding operational, technical and leadership positions. He has experience in deployed C4 Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance operations as well as experience in Aircraft Carrier Battle group operations as a Tactical Action officer and Combat Direction Center Officer. He has operational experience in most regions of the globe including Asia Pacific as a Mission commander/ tactical coordinator with the Royal Australian Air Force. His technical experience includes directing rapid prototyping of airborne C4ISR systems and alignment of commercial capabilities to meet defense and security requirements. Additionally he has diplomatic / defense cooperation experience as an Armaments Cooperation Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Paris, France.
 

He is a graduate of Florida State University where he earned a BS in Physics and he holds a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Space Systems Engineering program at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School.

Phil’s career began as an Avionic engineering apprentice at the Royal Naval Aircraft Yard Fleetlands in Gosport Hampshire.
Highlights of Phil’s career in aviation to date are:-
• Working with the REME in Germany;
• Implementing business change in the Defence Aviation Repair Agency;
• Working in MOD airworthiness policy;
• Management and development of UAV research programmes for the MOD;
• Project managing the implementation of interim Search and Rescue (SAR) Helicopter contract in introducing new technology;
• Project engineer for the Joint SAR Helicopter Procurement, holding airworthiness and safety delegations;
• Managing through life support of 20+ MOD UAV capabilities which provided surveillance and information superiority for the RAF, RN and Army.
Phil’s current role is Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) Aviation Technical Assurance Manager. Responsible for the technical aspects of the procurement and acceptance into service of MCA SAR Helicopter service throughout the UK, MCA Aerial Surveillance capability and Maritime drone pathfinder.

He works with customers to understand and create operationally focused solutions to their mission requirements with a focus on the exploitation of their GEOINT and IMINT intelligence workflows. Stefan provides extensive support to Navies and maritime organisations looking to augment the ISR available to support their mission needs through the use and manipulation of satellite-derived electro-optical and radar data. Stefan previously worked for Jane’s Defence for 8 years and holds an MA with Distinction from University College London and a BA from the University of Bath.

A master mariner and a committed proponent of the maritime users’ perspective, Rear Admiral Nick Lambert concluded a long naval operational career as the UK National Hydrographer in December 2012. Globally connected, Nick is a key thought leader on Blue Economy potential and tech innovation in associated domains.
He advises on a wide range of marine and maritime issues, including: the importance of spatial data infrastructures and hydrography for maritime economies; the evolution of eNavigation and GNSS vulnerability; near or real time situational awareness (especially from space based assets and applications), and maritime training and education.

RAdm. Alfonso Pérez de Nanclares y Pérez de Acevedo joined the Naval Academy in 1979 and graduated as Lieutenant Junior Grade in 1984.
He has spent most of his career in afloat Units and Staffs, both national and NATO, as well as European Union. He has commanded four ships: FPB “Ordoñez”, OPV “Serviola”, FFG “Santa María” and LPD “Galicia”, and has also served for four years in the Spanish Air Force 221 Squadron as TACCO (P3 Tactical Coordinator). During this period, he deployed to Operations “Active Endeavour” and “Enduring Freedom”, as Executive Officer of the frigate SPS “Canarias”.
He coursed Naval Communications Studies and graduated in the Naval War College.
Promoted to RAdm. on November 2015, he served as Head of Operations Branch in SP Navy HQ until November 2016, when he assumed command of the Naval Action Group 1 (COMGRUP-1).
In 2017 he was designated Deputy Commander (DCOM) of the Operation “Atalanta” in the OHQ in Northwood (UK) and in 2018 was deployed as Force Commander of EUNAVFOR SOMALIA on board his Flag Ship SPS “Castilla”.
After his deployment he served as DCOM in the HRF (M) SP HQ (SPMARFOR) until he was assigned to his current position in February 2020.
RAdm. Pérez de Nanclares is married to Isabel Fernández, and they have four daughters.

Hans-Jörg Detlefsen was born in 1963 in Böel/Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, initiated his military career in 1983.

After naval officer training, he conducted his flight training on fighter/bomber aircraft in Sacramento, USA; Cottesmore,UK; and Fürstenfeldbruck and Jever in Germany. He graduated as a naval aviator for TORNADO aircraft in 1989.

In 1999, he became squadron leader at Naval Air Wing 2 Eggebek. From 2003 to 2004, he served as group commander and was responsible for the transfer of naval air capabilities to the German Air Force after the decision was made to reduce naval air capabilities.

He has collected more than 2,000 flying hours in 15 years of active flying duty. During this time, he commanded German naval fighter/bombers several times on extended flights in international exercises, including weapons and missile training (live firing) abroad.

From 1997 to 1999, he attended the general staff course at the Bundeswehr Command and Staff College in Hamburg. After assignments as military assistant to the German Naval Fleet Commander and as desk officer in the Ministry of Defence, he returned to the Command and Staff College in 2004 as a tutor on the Joint General Staff course.

From 2006 to 2008 he worked as a military assistant to the Minister of Defence. After promotion to captain, was assigned to the post of military advisor and Division Head in the Permanent Representation of Germany to the EU in Brussels.

In 2012 he returned to Nordholz/Cuxhaven as Chief of Staff of the Naval Air Command. In 2013, he became Commander-in-Chief of Naval Air Command. During that period, he was in charge of reorganising the naval air forces and prepared for the introduction of new types of aircraft, helicopters and drones into the German Navy.

In 2016, he was appointed as Head of Division in the Directorate-General for Security and Defence Policy at the Ministry of Defence in Berlin, with responsibility for the FMOD’s bilateral relations and military capacity-building worldwide. On year later in 2017, he was appointed as Head of Division for military matters and security policy at the Federal Chancellery. In 2018, he was the interim Head of the Inter-ministerial working group on hybrid threats. In June 2019, he took over command of NATO Maritime Air Command (COM MARAIR). Hans-Jörg has two grown children.

Rear Admiral Detlefsen qualifications include the US Navy Flag Level Course Maritime Component Commander and the Senior Navigator course with the US Air Force. Additionally he has had training on speaking, communication, and moderator skills, completed the UN observer course participant at NORDIC UN and the EU Defence College High-Level Course on Sector Security Reform (SSR/ DDR).

Rear Admiral Jean-Michel Martinet, Deputy Operation Commander of the operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI, joined the French Navy in 1989. Throughout his career, he participated in many naval operations from Haiti to the Indian Ocean, and commanded on three occasions (the supply and transport ship “Bougainville”, the intelligence collection ship “Dupuy De Lome”, and the amphibious assault ship “Foudre”). He has a large experience in operational staff: he was chief of staff of the French combined amphibious task force within FRMARFOR in 2012, Commander of the CTF150 in the Indian Ocean during the French command mandate in 2013, and deputy of the Admiral commanding the Naval Action Force for the ships based in Toulon. He is Deputy Commander of EUNAVFOR MED IRINI since the launch of the operation in March 2019.

Rear Admiral (OF-7) Krzysztof ‘Kris’ Jaworski was born in 1966, and is a 1990 graduate of the Polish Naval Academy with the Master of Navigation and Naval Armament. Additionally, he holds master’s degree in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University in Washington, DC (2015). Moreover, RADM Jaworski graduated from the Naval War College in Newport, RI in 1998. He has had multiple command and staff positions throughout the last 28 years.
His sea tours include commanding officer, Tarantul-class corvette; flotilla and squadron staff officer and chief of staff. Finally, in 2007 he was appointed as a commander of the Fast Patrol Boat Squadron and was promoted to Captain.
Ashore, RADM Jaworski assumed duties as the senior naval advisor to the Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces as well as served in Maritime Operational Division N-3, Polish Navy HQ.
His operational deployment includes chief of staff, Deputy Support Operations, NATO Training Mission Afghanistan, Kabul. Afterwards, he was assigned as a Deputy
of Chief of Armament Directorate, Navy Inspectorate, General Command of the Polish Armed Forces.
His staff assignments also include chief of staff, 8th Coastal Defense Flotilla, Swinoujscie (2015) as well as commander of 3rd Ships’ Flotilla in Gdynia (2016) followed by his promotion to flag officer in November 2016.
He assumed his current position as Maritime Component Commander in May 2018 and in August he was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral (upper half).
Jaworski’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Cross of Merit, Silver Long Service Medal, Afghanistan Star, Gold Medal of Merit for National Defense,
Gold Medal of the Armed Forces in the Service of the Fatherland, Non-Article 5 Medal, Pro Patria Medal and other various personal, unit and service awards.
RADM Jaworski and his wife have been happily married for more than 30 years
and have two adult sons. He is an active long-distance runner. He is interested
in maritime history, particularly the Polish Navy engagement during WW2.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
