Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability 2022

The SAE Media Group are delighted to announce that the 7th annual Future Armoured Vehicles Survivability Conference will return to the Copthorne Tara Hotel, London, with the main conference on the 16th and 17th November  and our enormously popular Active Protection Systems Focus Day running on the 15th November.

As the only armoured vehicle conference dedicated to the area of survivability, the 2022 event will gather programme managers, capability directors, commanders from the military, senior engineers, chief scientists and platform managers from leading solution providers to discuss what nations are doing to protect their armoured vehicles and personnel.

Unlike any other event, the survivability conference is a meeting for the international armoured vehicle community designed around a series of focused discussions on the strategies and technologies being adopted to enhance crew and platform survivability. As seen in recent operations, threats to the vehicle are increasing in both scope and size. Traditional lightly armed combatants now have access to an increasing array of lethal anti-armour capabilities. With the continued proliferation of advanced anti-tank weaponry around the world, and as armed forces pivot to addressing near-peer adversaries, armored vehicle survivability remains as important as it ever has been.
 

This conference is a focused study on how to enhance survivability and addresses all layers of the survivability spectrum. Key capabilities that will be covered are signature management, situational awareness, armoured and blast protection, C-IED, vehicle obscuration systems, and an overall picture of integrated survivability.

Brigadier (Ret.) Ian Cameron-Mowat

Brigadier (Ret'd) Ian Cameron-Mowat works as an independent consultant in vehicle systems, electronic countermeasures, surveillance, and counter-terrorism technology; he is also a founding director of CSB Defence, a consultancy company operating across a number of technology sectors in defence and security. In both roles, he helps companies to find opportunities and win business. He has spoken at or chaired conferences on vehicle survivability and situational awareness,
robotics and autonomous systems, counter-drone and counter-IED. Ian went into officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1983. As a Russian graduate, he had a busy Cold War. After that unexpected success, he alternated between mainstream Royal Signals appointments and posts in equipment capability, security, and counterterrorism in the UK and with the United Nations. Highlights of his earlier career including waking up on the wrong side of the Berlin Wall the morning after it came down and spending his birthday with his Regiment up to his chest in the cold, muddy River Ouse when it flooded York in 2000. His final seven years in uniform were spent, first as a colonel and finally as a brigadier, heading Special Projects and Force Protection teams in the UK MOD’s procurement organization, Defence Equipment and Support. Among other areas he was responsible for the UK’s counter-IED systems, force protection surveillance and active protection systems for armoured vehicles.

Brigadier Michael Fayers

Brigadier Mike Fayers joined the Army in 1998 after reading a degree in Economics at Portsmouth University and commissioned into the Royal Corps of Signals.
His regimental service included close support to Air Support, Brigade and Joint Headquarters, and Director Special Forces. His staff appointments include J5 Information Operations in Multinational Division South East, Cyber Defence Operations within ACDS Operations, Army RP in FMC and C4ISR Force Development in Army Headquarters. He has served on operations in Kosovo, Northern Ireland and Iraq.
He commanded 216 (Parachute) Signal Squadron at sub-unit level, unit command of both 30 Signal Regiment and Queen’s Gurkha Signals, and as an OF5 Component Commander of the Joint Force Communication Information Systems for Ex SAIF SAREEA 3.
He is a graduate of Higher Command and Staff Course 21, Australia’s Advanced Command and Staff Course and has an MSc from Cranfield University in Information Systems.
Brigadier Mike is married to Cheri and they have two children Henry 10) and Thomas (9) and has a hyper Australian Labradoodle named Bodhi. He enjoys playing most sports and his interests including, hill walking, scuba diving, football, skiing, golf (badly) and squash; and is President of Royal Signals Boxing and Squash. Brigadier Mike is currently Head of Military Capability Plans within the Futures Directorate in Army Headquarters.

Colonel Yves Raymond

Colonel Yves Raymond is a Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineer and worked at all level within the Land Equipment Management System.
He served with the Canadian Forces Joint Operational Support Group, was a member of the directing staff at Canadian Forces College and was Commandant of the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers School. He deployed to Bosnia, Kandahar and Iraq.
In 2021, he moved to his current position as the Director Armament Sustainment Programme Management.
Colonel Raymond holds a Master of Science in Engineering in Gun Systems Design from Cranfield University (United Kingdom) and a Master of Science in Defense and Strategy from Madras University (India).

Dr Jan Spannhake

Dr Jan Spannhake

After his doctoral thesis in physics on high-temperature MEMS in the cooperate research centre of Airbus Defence, he worked for 2 years as a research associate on the Development of a system to detect hidden explosives by Laser Ion Mobility Spectroscopy (LIMS)

In 2008 he moved to the department of missile warner systems and joined the project MUSS (Multi-functional Self-Protection System) at an early stage being responsible for the electro-optical components of the Missile Warner.

In 2016 he took over the role as Technical Manager of the MUSS for the MEDUSA TDP in UK, which also included the implementation and demonstration of MUSS on the Challenger 2 platform.

Since 2020 he manages the development of MUSS 2 - the next generation of MUSS.
Today he is the chief engineer of all ground based self-protection systems of the company HENSOLDT Sensors in Taufkirchen, Germany.

Martin Hagström is a Deputy Research Director at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). Martin is the programme manager of the Weapons and protection area and responsible for the support to the Swedish Armed Forces’ weapons and protection research planning. He has served in several different positions at FOI and participated in a number of national and international research projects. Martin has a background in systems and control and besides work on legal aspects of autonomous weapon systems he is involved in analysis of systems of systems and assessment of combat effectiveness.

LTC Scott Coulson is a retired Armor officer, with tours as a tank platoon leader, scout platoon leader, tank company executive officer and tank company commander. He has also served in combat as a Cavalry Squadron Operations Officer in 4th Infantry Division in Baghdad in 2006, and was the executive officer and Regimental Deputy Commander of the 11th ACR, the OPFOR at the National Training Center at Fort Irwin. He has in-depth experience in mounted and dismounted maneuver warfare in all types of terrain as both a commander and trainer. He served as a team leader and operations officer in Afghanistan on the Counterinsurgency Advisory and Assistance Team, working directly for COMISAF and observing mounted and dismounted counterinsurgency operations in 3 of the 4 regional command areas. As a Battalion Commander he both trained Joint combat advisors from across the force to prepare them for deployment to Iraq and Afghanistan, and also deployed as a Security Force Assistance Team leader while in command, advising Afghan forces in Kunar province while attached to a light Infantry Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division. He has thorough knowledge and understanding of combat vehicles, systems, maintenance and operations from his extensive operational career and has operated or led units equipped with M1IP, M1A1/A2 tanks, and M2/M3 Bradley Fighting Vehicles. In his most recent role as Maneuver Branch Chief in Capabilities Development Directorate of the Army Capabilities Integration Center (ARCIC) LTC Coulson spent three years managing requirements for the Army’s combat vehicle fleet. His portfolio included both emerging initiatives and programs (MPF, GMV, LRV, GCV, AMP-V, Stryker Lethality Upgrade and Vehicle Protection Systems) as well as existing programs of record (Abrams, Bradley, Stryker, MRAP and Hercules). He worked extensively preparing leadership for Configuration Steering Boards, Weapon System Reviews, Army and Joint Requirement Oversight Councils, Capability Portfolio Reviews and advised leadership on key decisions, prioritization and resourcing. In this role he networked extensively within the Army and DoD, as well as in civilian industry and academia to gain a full understanding of various combat vehicle stakeholders, their interests, roles, positions and capabilities. He took an active role in the development, staffing and vetting of the current requirements for both MPF and VPS. He has also participated in live fire testing of active protection systems and vehicle underbody protection systems. He twice presented the maneuver force update at the National Ground Intelligence Center’s annual Threat Coordination Working Group, and has a full understanding of anti-armor systems, technology, proliferation, and tactics. He most recently assisted in writing, editing, staffing, publishing and implementing the U.S. Army Combat Vehicle Modernization Strategy (CVMS), and has made several public presentations on the CVMS and the implementation plan for it. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania State University with a B.A. degree in History, and has a Masters in Business Administration (with honors) from Arizona State University. He is also a graduate of the Defense Acquisition University Combat Developers Course (JCIDS).

Upon retirement he founded Mass XV LLC (mass x velocity = momentum) Maneuver Combat Systems Consulting focused on providing requirement strategy, business development, mission engineering, and other marketing services to firms who offer cutting edge technology for Army warfighters. Mass XV is a growing company, headquartered in Southern Virginia.

Ant Sharman set up Evocatus on leaving the regular army in 2016, after a 17 year career training and leading tank crews. Over the last 6 years, he has built a strong reputation designing, delivering and participating in wargaming events for a range of purposes and customers. Although he has run a number of exciting projects for corporate clients, much of his time is committed to Dstl’s Defence Wargaming Centre.
Lt Col Sharman is an army reservist; he is currently Commanding Officer of The Royal Wessex Yeomanry, the UK’s reserve Armoured Regiment.

Lieutenant Colonel James de St John-Pryce commissioned into the Blues and Royals with a passion for reconnaissance, he served in the Household Cavalry Regiment before stints in training, at mounted duty and in media operations; also as the Operations Officer for the Brigade Reconnaissance Force in Iraq.
After Staff College, he served in the Permanent Joint Headquarters J3 (Operations) before commanding C Squadron HCR. He has also worked in Military Strategic Effects, for the European Training Mission in Mogadishu and on the AJAX programme. More recently he has been in the Joint Force Headquarters.

OTL Boenke, Karlheinz was born on the 7th of July 1963 in MUENCHEN, Bavaria, Germany. In 1984 enlisted in the German Army and started his military career in the Maintenance Corps. OTL Boenke attended the officer training from 1986 -1987 in ULM and HANNOVER. After having completed his engineering studies at the University of the Bundeswehr he served as a firing safety officer at the main training area GRAFENWOEHR from 1991
till 1992. Further on, amongst other posts, he served as logistics expert in the Army Material Office in BAD NEUENAHR, as a technical officer the Infantry Battalion 322 and as a commander of a training unit at the Technical School in AACHEN. He was deployed in the SFOR mission in 1998 as the technical officer of the Field Hospital RAJLOVC (BIH) and in 2006 in the HQ KFOR (KOS) as deputy JOC director.
Since 2012 OTL Boenke is assigned to the Army Concepts and Capabilities Development Centre in KOELN as the authorized army representative for the MRAV BOXER.

He commissioned into 3 SCOTS, Royal Regiment of Scotland and trained and deployed in Light Infantry and Mechanised Infantry roles specialising in Anti-Tank operations. Iain finished Regimental Duty as the Adjutant before deploying in 2019 to Afghanistan as the Kabul Security Force Liaison Officer within Headquarters Resolute Support. Prior to Staff College he served with the Standing Joint Force Headquarters focusing on operational planning and Information Operations, assisting in coordination of activity between Joint Expeditionary Force nations to counter Russian aggression.

Maj Atchison is a current Sub-unit Commander with The Queen’s Royal Hussars, OC D Sqn (The Black Pig). During his career he has filled a number of Aide and Military assistant roles in UK MOD as well as UK Space Command.

Maj Atchison was the desk officer for Challenger 3 as it passed through the Joint Requirements Oversight Committee and was then funded in its current form by HM Treasury. As well as MBT capability experience he has led a number of other activities in Army HQ, namely the integrated land survivability working group.

Çagri Acar is the systems engineering team leader for active protection systems (APS) at ASELSAN Inc. He has been working at ASELSAN Inc. since 1999. He has started as a test and evaluation engineer and after 2004 he was appointed as a systems engineer. During his career, he has been involved in the development, testing and evaluation of Electronic Warfare (EW) Self Protection Systems, namely missile warning systems, radar warning systems, electronic countermeasure systems for the airborne platforms. Since 2014, he is the lead responsible for the development of PULAT and AKKOR APSs for the land platforms, mainly Main Battle Tank and Light Armored Vehicles. Çagri holds B.S. and M.S. Electronic Engineering degree.

Recognized as one of the most prominent Active Protection Systems (APS) Campaign Leaders, Dan Kalfus is a world-renowned Business Development expert and an entrepreneur at heart.
He is known for being a proactive leader as well as for building long lasting partnerships with Defence industry leaders.
After gaining unique experience via winning strategic contracts with the German Ministry of Defense (MOD) for the procurement of combat systems, Dan had lead the establishment of EuroTrophy GmbH and was appointed Managing Director of the company upon its foundation in March 2022.

After his study of laser technology, electro optics and quantum physics in Germany and Australia, Marc served in different engineering positions in the laser industry in Germany before joining Hensoldt Optronics GmbH (formerly Carl Zeiss Optronics GmbH) in 2007.

Marc Krause is the Project Manager for the HENSOLDT local 360° situational awareness system (SETAS) within the ground-based systems business line at HENSOLDT Optronics. He has been with the SETAS product development since its inception. Marc is key player within the team and has led this activity for the numerous vehicle integrations and system evaluations of the SETAS system.

As former Operations Director Marc managed the production of thermal cameras, daylight cameras and laser rangefinders at Hensoldt Optronics for ten years.

Stefan Thelin, Head of Technology development.
Mr Thelin holds a Masters degree in Electronic Engineering from the Mid Sweden University of Sundsvall, Sweden. He has been working with BAE Systems since 2001 and in 2008 he was appointed Head of Technology with the overall responsibility for strategic decisions of the key capabilities of the CV90 Platform and All Terrain Vehicles and by that leading most of our R&D projects.
He handles future capability studies both internally and customer studies. Mr Thelin is also being represented in the 7 nation strong CV90 User Group.

Previous positions for Mr Thelin at BAE Systems includes Technical Project Manager leading the development team of the CV9035 for the contract to the Netherlands as well as being Head of Vetronics design.
 

Mr Tarkan Turkcan

Mr Turkcan has more than 31 years of active duty served within the Royal Nether-lands Army.
Within those 31 years, he has served at the Recon battalion, Air Assault Brigade, Tank battalion, Cavalry school, Combat manoeuvre development centre and the
Defense Material organisation.
Performed 5 missions and several additional foreign assignments.

He has a long history with the CV90, mainly for setting up the requirements as end user representative and responsible for the operational qualifications.

He has been working with BAE Systems Hägglunds since may 2022 as Director of the CV90 platforms at Business and Development. In this position keeping customer and future customer relations and setting up the strategy, research, and develop-ment on the CV90 platform.
Mr Turkcan is also taking part from BAE:s point of view in the CV90 user groups, personally being a representative in the 7 nation strong CV90 User Group.

 

Mr Tom Halliday

Mr Tom Halliday

Tom Halliday is a wargaming expert and principal Land analyst at Dstl, delivering impactful analysis for the UK Army. He has conducted research into Light Forces, Conceptual Force Development and is currently supporting the Boxer Through Life Capability Programme. He is also one of the co-founders of UK Fight Club, using his expert knowledge of the commercial wargame Combat Mission to generate a series of well-received campaigns for the Club’s members.

Mr William Hooper

William Hooper is a Principal Land Survivability Engineer within the Platform Systems division of DSTL. He is currently the technical lead for the Next Generation Electro Optical Sensor (NGEOs) for Land APS package, alongside a number of other enabling technology research packages. William has worked in the fields of Integrated Survivability, Vulnerability and lethality assessment, and test and evaluation during his career, but has predominantly specialised in the assessment and evaluation of Land based Active Protection Systems (APS).

WO2 Liam Kennedy

Liam joined the Army in late 1999 and after training joined a heavy armour unit specialising as a Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank Driver.
He has completed Operational Tours in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan in both mounted and ground holding roles.
Liam has deployed all over the world including Canada, South Africa, Poland, Estonia and the Republic of Korea. He has worked in a variety of roles including asset manager, career manager, logistics operations manager and as an intelligence analyst with the United Nations.
Liam is married with one child and lives in Dorset. Outside of work he enjoys outdoor pursuits, field sports and DIY.

    WHAT IS CPD?

    CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

    ‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

    CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

    Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

    CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

    CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

    There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

    For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

    CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

    TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

    Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

    ‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

    ‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

    The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

    As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.
