Social Media within the Defence and Military Sector
19 November - 20 November 2015
Social Media within the Defence and Military Sector

Social media has revolutionised our means of communication intercepting every region, sector and facet on an internal scale. Industries have been forced to not only acknowledge its existence but must embrace and evolve in order to survive in this new age of digitisation. The Military and Defence industry are no exception to this rule; for in recent years we have seen the utilisation of social media in order to accomplish many applications. However, we have also observed the use of social media for much darker intentions, with extremist groups using it as medium to spread their image and brand at an alarming rate on a global scale. We are entering into a new age whereby the security is not only determined by physical warfare and diplomatic reasoning but increasingly dependent on our digital capabilities as well. The question is, who is winning?

Following the phenomenal success of last year, SAE Media Group are pleased to announce the re-introduction of SAE Media Group's 5th Annual Social Media In The Defence & Military conference taking place in London on the 19th and 20th of November, 2015. This conference shall explore the developments within the social media space in a manner which is directly applicable to those who operate within the Defence and Military industry.

The conference shall cover all aspects of social media use from:

• Recruitment and Propaganda
• Strategy communication
• Public
• Cyber security
• Intelligence
• Extremist and cybercriminal threats
• Creating effective content
• Ethics
• Data sensitivity and management

Very interesting array of speakers – love how international the audience is as well.” - Delegate 2014

“Best conference in terms of quality and people present” - Delegate 2014

“Smaller audience allowed for easier networking” - Delegate 2014

Cycurity Vision Ltd. provides cutting-edge Business Intelligence and Reputation Management solutions. The company’s founders are two high-ranking veteran officers of the Israeli Intelligence Community. The company’s staff is comprised of members of elite IDF intelligence units, as well as social-network professionals and analysts with capabilities relevant to the countries in which we operate. Cycurity’s ORM (Online Reputation Management) department provides large-scale thought leadership solutions, based on its propriety technology and field-tested methodology. The department identifies, befriends and cultivates relationships with thought leaders, activists, decision makers or potential clientele (generally referred to as VIPs), thus leveraging these relationships to deliver quantifiable results for the client. The ORM department works on the belief that a self-motivated VIP becomes the ideal advocate for our client’s messages. Using the power of social networks, we can build a very large amount of real relationships with the identified VIPs, by giving them one-on-one personal attention. This attention generates trust, later to be converted into a wide range of influence, from decision making to mass mobilization. These results could be translated into acceptance of the client’s narrative, positive content regarding the client’s message and high-ranking decision-making. The combination of our knowledge, in-house technology and military intelligence experience, delivers successful results and achieves high conversion rates without compromising scalability. Our clients include countries, large NGOs, corporate entities, private individuals and commercial firms.

More than one billion social media posts are published online everyday. So how do you detect information essential to your organisation? Echosec offers a new approach to search for relevant social media. In the past, keywords or hashtags were the predominant method for searching through social media data. Unfortunately, starting with keywords or hashtags requires that you have prior information about the search. The resulting accuracy of the results is also subject to spelling mistakes and colloquialisms. Furthermore many posts don’t include text at all as users continue to let photos speak for them. Echosec enables you to search starting with simply a single location of interest. Echosec taps into all of the major social media networks. Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, and many other social media sources are included the search results. Even international social media giants like VKontake (Russia), Sina Weibo (China) are available on the system. We are constantly looking for more data sources and adding them as they become important to our customers. Echosec has developed an effective method for gathering critical intelligence and monitoring incidents in real-time, delivering actionable knowledge to law enforcement, security, and intelligence professionals. The system wide focus on team collaboration, communication, and efficiency has launched Echosec into a market leading position as the platform for situational awareness. Ultimately, the goal is to provide an effective location-based social media solution to customers who are interested in identifying defence and security threats, reducing corporate online exposure, or simply want to engage with influential citizens within a given area. We work, govern, and socialise primarily by location. We live that way - now you can search that way.

WHAT IS CPD?

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development’. It is essentially a philosophy, which maintains that in order to be effective, learning should be organised and structured. The most common definition is:

‘A commitment to structured skills and knowledge enhancement for Personal or Professional competence’

CPD is a common requirement of individual membership with professional bodies and Institutes. Increasingly, employers also expect their staff to undertake regular CPD activities.

Undertaken over a period of time, CPD ensures that educational qualifications do not become obsolete, and allows for best practice and professional standards to be upheld.

CPD can be undertaken through a variety of learning activities including instructor led training courses, seminars and conferences, e:learning modules or structured reading.

CPD AND PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTES

There are approximately 470 institutes in the UK across all industry sectors, with a collective membership of circa 4 million professionals, and they all expect their members to undertake CPD.

For some institutes undertaking CPD is mandatory e.g. accountancy and law, and linked to a licence to practice, for others it’s obligatory. By ensuring that their members undertake CPD, the professional bodies seek to ensure that professional standards, legislative awareness and ethical practices are maintained.

CPD Schemes often run over the period of a year and the institutes generally provide online tools for their members to record and reflect on their CPD activities.

TYPICAL CPD SCHEMES AND RECORDING OF CPD (CPD points and hours)

Professional bodies and Institutes CPD schemes are either structured as ‘Input’ or ‘Output’ based.

‘Input’ based schemes list a precise number of CPD hours that individuals must achieve within a given time period. These schemes can also use different ‘currencies’ such as points, merits, units or credits, where an individual must accumulate the number required. These currencies are usually based on time i.e. 1 CPD point = 1 hour of learning.

‘Output’ based schemes are learner centred. They require individuals to set learning goals that align to professional competencies, or personal development objectives. These schemes also list different ways to achieve the learning goals e.g. training courses, seminars or e:learning, which enables an individual to complete their CPD through their preferred mode of learning.

The majority of Input and Output based schemes actively encourage individuals to seek appropriate CPD activities independently.

As a formal provider of CPD certified activities, SAE Media Group can provide an indication of the learning benefit gained and the typical completion. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the delegate to evaluate their learning, and record it correctly in line with their professional body’s or employers requirements.

GLOBAL CPD

Increasingly, international and emerging markets are ‘professionalising’ their workforces and looking to the UK to benchmark educational standards. The undertaking of CPD is now increasingly expected of any individual employed within today’s global marketplace.

We can provide a certificate for all our accredited events. To request a CPD certificate for a conference , workshop, master classes you have attended please email events@saemediagroup.com
